SIGOURNEY – Home course advantage wasn’t the only reason why they won. Although it certainly didn’t hurt.
Friday afternoon the Sigourney boys golf team won their home invitational. They did it in fashion too, with three of the top-4 scores coming from a Sigourney golfer. The Savages shot a 295 as a team, they bested Solon who was second with a 315. BGM was third with a 326. Don Bosco was fourth with a 335 and Grand View Christian finished fifth with a 343.
“I think the guys definitely took advantage of the home course, but you still have to take and make the shots that are given to them,” said Sigourney golf coach, Zach Tremmel. “We had some guys step up with some really good rounds today.”
Leading the way through the course was Solon Yates, the junior golfer who has been putting together great round after great round recently. Friday afternoon was no exception as he was able to shoot a 68 which earned him the overall medalist honors.
Yates’ round started off on a blistering pace as he had three birdies in the first four holes.
“It felt pretty good out there on the course,” Yates said after his round. “I was very happy with my score and obviously happy for the team score as well.”
The front nine for Yates concluded with two birdies and a bogie. He finished with 34 strokes on the front of the course.
Yates started off the back nine (in reality just the front nine again) with an eagle. He then had a par on the next five holes.
“I felt really in control throughout the entire round,” Yates said. “I was hitting my driver really good. If I can hit my driver really well out here I usually have a pretty low score.”
Yates shot another 34 on the back nine to finish with his score of a 68.
“We had one, two and four in the whole tournament, that shows a lot of dominance,” Coach Tremmel said. “Hopefully we can keep that going as we head into the final few weeks of the season.”
Freshman Jordan Tremmel finished as the runner-up medalist with a 73. Isaac Bruns was fourth with a 76. Ike Molyneux was fifth with a 78. Josh Wyatt finished eighth with an 83 and Cain Weber shot an 85 to finish 11th.
The tournament on Friday capped off a week of wins for the Sigourney golf team.
In a dual meet on April 21 they were able to best Lynnville-Sully 150-218.
Yates led the team with a 34. Bruns and Ike Molyneux both shot a 38. Weber, Wyatt and Tremmel all shot a 40.
On April 24 the Savages bested Iowa Valley 148-0 (Iowa Valley didn’t have enough members to compete as a team). Yates led that round with a 35. Weber and Tremmel were both second with 37s. Wyatt shot a 39. Molyneux finished with a 41 and Bruns shot a 46.
“We all know that we are good and we can compete at the state level,” Yates said. “I think the wins just kind of reinforces the fact that we can play and put together some really good rounds.”
