OTTUMWA – Sometimes it is all about learning from your competition.
During a busy week last week the Savages were able to pick up two wins, but maybe, more importantly, some lessons in a narrow defeat against Ottumwa.
The Sigourney girls golf team started off the week with a 214-231 win over Lynville-Sully.
Ella Bruns led the way in that win as she and Adalynne Tremmel both shot a 52. Kayla Renner, Reagan Clarahan and Ella Fineran all shot a 55. Hannah Hanselman finished with a 58.
On Thursday the Sigourney golfers were back in action as they bested Iowa Valley 201-0.
Once again, Bruns was at the top of the leaderboard as she shot a 48. Ella Fineran finished with a 50.
Renner finished with 51 strokes, Clarahan had 52 strokes. Tremmel shot a 54 and Hanselman finished with a 55.
Tuesday afternoon the Savages had challenged themselves with a triangular against two 4A schools, Ottumwa and Des Moines East, who were playing in Ottumwa. The Savages finished second overall with 212 strokes. Ottumwa won the meet with a 199.
Renner led the Savages with a 48, finishing in third place overall. Hanselman shot a 51. Tremmel finished with a 56. Bruns shot a 57. Clarahan had a 58. Fineran shot a 59.
“Coming to a harder course and playing on bigger greens is only going to make our team better,” said Sigourney head golf coach Zach Tremmel after the April 22 meet. “These are quicker greens than what we are playing on. I think we gave up some strokes there. Hopefully that is an eye opener for them.”
Coach Tremmel said the decision to play two 4A schools was to help give the Sigourney players some experience on playing on a longer course and against players that are used to playing should help down the road.
“Whenever you step up to play against bigger schools it is only natural to want to play better,” Tremmel said. “The Ottumwa and East girls are used to playing on these longer and quicker greens. I thought our girls really represented well against these bigger schools. Our goal is to be playing our best golf at the end of the season, and this should help with that.”
