BROOKLYN – Another tournament and another third place finish for the Panthers.
On Nov. 22 both Pekin and English Valleys competed at the BGM girls tournament. Pekin was third overall with 135 total points. English Valleys was 12th overall with 43 total points.
At the BGM girls tournament meet held over the weekend the Pekin girls team came home with two champions.
In the 110 pound bracket, Lexa Nelson moved to 6-0 on the season as she won all three of her matches, and the bracket. Nelson started off with a 32 second pin over a BGM opponent. She then needed 2:30 to win over Hollie Roberts of EBF in the semifinals. Nelson won the championship with a pin in 1:28 over a North Tama wrestler.
Hailey Pedrick was able to win all three of her matches to improve to 6-1 overall on the season. Pedrick started the tournament with a pin in 18 seconds against an English Valleys opponent. Her next round was quicker as Pedrick pinned a Southeast Polk opponent in 17 seconds.
In the championship Pedrick gained her third-straight first period pin as she needed 1:48 to pin an Iowa Valley opponent.
Bree Earnest placed fourth in the 115-pound bracket. Earnest started off with a win by pin in the first round. She needed just 1:37 to gain the victory. During the quarterfinal match Earnest was able to pin her English Valleys opponent in 1:14.
After bing pinned in the semifinals, Earnest fought well, but was pinned in 1:10 in the third place match.
Rylee Frye placed third in the 235-pound bracket. Frye won her quarterfinal round with a third period pin over Bella Schott from English Valleys. In the semifinals, Frye was pinned in the third period.
The third place match featured Frye winning by a pin in 2:30 over a Tipton wrestler. Â
Lila Miller was fourth overall in the 130-pound bracket. Miller won her first match, pinning a North Tama opponent in 52 seconds. In the quarterfinals Miller needed just 1:12 to pin a Grinnell opponent.
Miller was injured in the quarterfinals and had to withdraw from the rest of the tournament.
Ivory Small finished fifth in the 135-pound bracket. Small’s tournament started with her being pinned by an EBF opponent. She would recover by pinning a BGM opponent in 55 seconds in the consolation semifinals. The tournament ended with Small pinning a Southeast Polk opponent in 1:58.
Brinley Phillips was sixth in the 145-pound bracket. Phillips started with a win by pin over a WACO opponent in a match that lasted just 1:40. After being pinned in her next two matches, Phillips was pinned in 2:37 in the fifth place match.
Carly Clubb finished sixth in the 190-pound bracket. Clubb was pinned in 49 seconds in the quarterfinals. She would then be pinned in 5:30 in the consolation semifinals, and was pinned in 3:03 in the fifth place match.
Alyvia Traner was able to place eighth in the 120-pound bracket. Traner was defeated by a tech fall in her first round. Traner would win her first consolation round match by pinning an Iowa Valley opponent in 1:07. Traner was pinned in the consolation semifinals, and was pinned in the seventh place match as well.
Ella Rose was able to finish seventh in the 155-pound bracket. Rose was pinned in 1:57 in the quarterfinals. She then pinned a Southeast Polk wrestler in 1:44 in the first consolation round. After being pinned in the consolation semifinals, Rose was able to win the seventh place match by pinning a North Mahaska opponent in 2:29.
Autumn Coleman also placed eighth. Coleman wrestled in the 125-pound bracket. Coleman was pinned in 38 seconds in her first round match. She would then recover by pinning a WACO opponent in 1:54 in the first round of the consolation bracket. Coleman was pinned in both the consolation semifinals and the seventh place match.
Reece Brisby finished seventh overall. Brisby wrestled in the 125-pound bracket and was pinned in 1:01 in the first round. Brisby won her first consolation round match with a pin in 1:10. After falling short in an 8-7 decision in the consolation semifinals, Brisby was able to pin her teammates, Coleman, in 1:50 to place seventh.
English Valleys wrestled in the BGM tournament as well.
Leading the way for the Bears was 105-pound wrestler, Emily Sieren, who would win her bracket.
Sieren started with a quarterfinal win in 1:03. She would then need just 1:24 to pin her Southeast Polk opponent. Sieren would win her bracket with a pin in 38 seconds in the championship match.
Bella Schott would place fifth overall. After being pinned in the quarterfinals Schott win pin her next two opponents in 1:23. That advanced her to the fifth place match where Schott was able to pin a WACO opponent in 1:42.
Peyton Conrad would finish seventh in the 145-pound bracket. Conrad’s first two matches ended with her being pinned in the first period. In the seventh place match, Conrad needed just 38 seconds to pin a WACO opponent. Â
