Sigourney girls split games; Sigourney boys sweep week

 SIGOURNEY – Three quarters of the games resulted in smiles last week.

For the most part, the second full week of January was a successful one for the Sigourney basketball teams.

The week started out on Tuesday as the Sigourney girls bested BGM 63-45. The Sigourney boys also would claim a win over BGM, 63-49.

Friday night both teams would return to action. the Sigourney girls fell to North Mahaska 55-44.

The boys would win their contest 59-26, in what was one of their most dominant performances of the season.

In the girls win over BGM, Sigourney held the lead from the first quarter, but secured the win with a 24-11 win in the second quarter. In the second half they scored 26 points, while limiting the Bears to 23 total points.

No scoring stats were available at press time from that game.

The Sigourney girls battled North Mahaska in their game on Friday night. Both teams were tied at 15 after the first quarter. North Mahaska gained a seven point lead at halftime, and extended that to nine points after three quarters.

The Savage girls basketball team stands at 8-4 on the season.

For the boys they had no trouble scoring in their pair of wins.

Against BGM the Sigourney boys won 69-39, as they worked their way to a 38-18 lead at halftime. The Savages added 31 more points in the second half to cruise to the victory.

John Berg led the scoring with 20 points in the win. He had a double-double with 11 rebounds.  

Solon Yates added 10 points. Another seven points came from Jordan Tremmel.Ike Molyneux and Carson O’Rourke both scored five points each. Landon Conrad scored four points.Landon Fisch also had four points. Brayden Wood added three points.

The momentum rolled into a lopsided win over North Mahaska on Friday night. In the 59-26 win over North Mahaska, the game was out of reach by halftime.

Sigourney scored 41 points in the first half, while limiting the Warhawks to just six. The Savages were outscored 20-18 in the second half, but that didn’t matter much.

John Berg led the way again with 19 points. Solon Yates added another 12 points. Carson O’Rourke finished with eight points. Brayden Wood added six points.

Landon Fisch and Jordan Tremmel both scored four points each in the win. Ty Goldman and Hunter Sellers both added two points.

The win sets the Savages at 8-3 overall on the season. They will host Colfax-Mingo and WACO this week.
