SIGOURNEY –  Last week proved they aren’t invincible, but yet the lessons learned might still be their biggest strength.

The Sigourney boys golf team played twice last week. On May 1 they were able to host a triangular against two conference foes, BGM and North Mahaska where the Savages were able to come out on top. Overall the Savages shot a 149. BGM finished with a 165 and North Mahaska was third with a 170.

On April 29 the Sigourney boys took part in the Oskaloosa Invitational where the Savages took eighth overall. Competing against mostly 3A schools the Savages were able to gain some course knowledge of the golf course where the South Iowa Cedar League Conference golf meet was played earlier this week.

During the May 1 event the Savages controlled the leaderboard as they used their homecourse advantage to the best of their abilities.

Solon Yates was the overall leader after he carded a 34 in his round. Josh Wyatt finished in a tie for the runner-up medalist honors with a 37. Yates displayed great knowledge of the home course as he was able to finish with two birdies and just one bogie record on his scorecard.

Wyatt was able to record one birdie with two bogies in his first round of May.

Ike Molyneux was fourth with a 38. Cain Weber, Isaac Bruns and Jordan Tremmel all finished in a tie for fifth with 40’s on their scorecard.

In the April 29 meet the Savages were the smallest school at the tournament, where they finished with 328 total strokes. Pella Christian won the meet with a 303. Pella was second with a 312, followed by Grinnell in third with a 314.

Yates was the leader for the Savages as he finished with 77 total strokes, which placed him 11th overall.

Tremmell shot a 79 to finish 16th. Weber and Bruns both shot an 86 to finish in 40th. Molyneux was able to finish with an 87.

The Savages returned to the Oskaloosa course on Monday to play in the conference tournament. Results from that event will be in the May 14 edition of the News-Review.
