The beginning of 2005 was dominated by ice and cold. A blizzard at the start of the school year gave Sigourney students six inches of snow and four days out of school., The storm froze the courthouse clock tower, stopping the clock at 8:22. By Valentine’s Day, all of the snow caused Lake Belva Deer to overflow. The time spent clearing snow was particularly impactful for long-time highway employee Jack Hammes, who was fired by the County Engineer for not having a Commercial Driver’s License. Hammes had been given a month to get a license, but claimed that the repeated storms kept him too busy clearing snow to obtain one. His coworkers spoke out against this at board of supervisors meetings.<\/p>\n

On March 8, the supervisors informed residents that they would be raising property taxes by $1.75 per $1,000 to cover a million dollar budget shortfall, claiming it was due to military homestead tax credits, the cost of running State-mandated voting machines, tax delinquency, state cuts to rural property taxes, a 19% decline in agriculture property values in the county, and the board not raising taxes in previous years. This raise came out to a 37% general levy increase and a 21% ag increase.<\/p>\n

The budget problems led to fierce debates over the plans to build a new $1-1.5 million maintenance shed, to replace an old wooden barn that didn’t meet fire, safety or structural codes. The debates played out in supervisor meetings and the News-Review’s letter to the editor section. Ultimately, the supervisors decided against building a new shed at that point.<\/p>\n

The Savage Eye, the Sigourney school paper, was excellent in the spring of 2005. Students Kristine Ballensky, Jennifer Clubb, Rebecca Clayton, Leah Herrick and Micah Stevens published updates on what former graduates were up to, odd bits of trivia, speculations about what life will be like in the year 3,000, and debates on the morality of the death penalty. Ballensky wrote Op-Eds with steller headlines like “Blonde: the Less Intelligent Hair Color?” and “Why It’s Good to Believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, and Heaven.” The best piece of writing they did that year was Ballensky’s March 9 story “A Lesson in Politics: the Hidden Agenda,” in which she recounted how Sigourney economics students were allegedly conned into being political props.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the year, What Cheer resident and Iowa State Representative Betty De Boef had begun championing a law that would place tags on beer kegs, to help monitor who sold kegs to minors. According to Ballensky, on March 1, Mary Krier, Susan Conroy, and Police Chief Allan Glandon spoke to Sigourney students about the bill. The class was told they would attend a debate and receive a tour of the Capital by Deboef and Senator Tom Rielly, then optionally hold signs at a news conference, if they wanted to. They did not attend a debate, but were pressured to stand behind Conroy and Krier and hold signs promoting the keg bill. After, they were told to serve root beer floats for 45 minutes to people at the capital. Ballensky wrote that they felt pressured into helping with a cause, whether they supported it or not. She ended her story by writing “The main lesson I learned that day is how some politicians can manipulate situations to get what they want. If we had been more informed and were asked instead of told to rally for the bill, we may have been more willing. I feel like this trip should have been optional. We came away from the trip feeling the situation was sneaky and rude.”<\/p>\n

Kristen Kitterman, the daughter of Sigourney resident Susan Kitterman, temporarily moved to Sigourney with her family after their home in New Orleans was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Many locals, horrified by the devastation, did what they could to help out and raise money for disaster relief. Sigourney firefighters Scott Wilson and Larry Smithart traveled to Louisiana to help with the disaster cleanup and rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Ralph Gatton and Shawn Calzaretta made repeated trips to Bogalusa, Louisina, in a painted old school bus full of building materials and food, to help out friends affected by the storm. The funds for supplies, fuel and bus maintenance came from a musical festival in Deep River and donation boxes in local businesses. “We have been called heroes,” Calzaretta told the News-Review. “The true heroes of Hurricane Katrina are the citizens of Bogalusa and the other devastated communities.”<\/p>\n

In March, SK wrestler Jon McLaughlin placed 5th at the State Wrestling Tournement. On March 14, three people were arrested when a group of law enforcement agencies shut down a meth lab in Delta. On April 8 and 9, Sigourney students presented the murder-mystery play \u201cWho Dunit\u2026and to Whom?\u201d On May 1, Daniel Brubaker set a new Iowa Deadlift record at 315 lbs. On May 16, infamous murderer Gayno Smith died due to a tear in his heart blood vessels.\u00a0\u00a0On July 4, Jackson Droz and Natalie Redlinger won the Lions Club\u2019s Sigourney Cutie Kiddie Contest. Brittany Pitzner was named the Keokuk County Fair Queen, while the Expo Queen was Amanda Wood. Little Miss Keokuk County was Lauren Molyneux and Little Mister Keokuk County was Cayle Kitzman. In October, Jarid Bain and Lara Alderson were crowned the Sigourney Homecoming King and Queen. On October 23, the What Cheer Opera House had a Beatle perform; unfortunately, it was Pete Best. On November 4 and 5, Sigourney drama students presented \u201cA Dickens\u2019 Christmas Carol.\u201d Sigourney Student Lisa Wehr was chosen to be a member of the 2004 All-State Orchestra, performing in Ames on November 19.<\/p>\n

The most memorable story of the year was the excellent football season of the Sigourney-Keota Cobras. In 2004, the team had gone undefeated in the main season, before losing to Waterloo Columbus in the semi-finals. 20 of the team\u2019s 22 starters returned, leading the team to a 63-6 victory over Fort Madison in the first game of the year. The team dominated for the rest of the season, beating Eddyville Blakesburg 56-0, Central Lee 67-0, Van Buren 69-0, and Albia 49-0. In the playoff semi-finals, they beat North Fayette 34-20, setting the Cobras up for a tense championship bout against the Sheldon Orabs, another undefeated team. The nail-biter, back and forth game was ultimately won by the Cobras, 27 to 24.<\/p>\n

After the game, Head Coach Bob Howards stated “We challenged the line to have the best game of their careers, on the biggest stage, and I think they answered the challenge very well.” He heaped heavy praise on the talent and hard work of players Bryan Bayliss, Jess Cavin, Fletcher Flynn, Brandon Berg, Tyler Sheets, Jon McLaughlin, Joel Pieffer and Ryne Schwenke.<\/p>\n

“I can’t say enough about the goal-setting and commitment that this group has shown,” said Howard. “They bought into the idea of setting high goals and pursuing them, at the risk of failure. They understood that the pursuit of the goal is the real achievement after all. I am very proud of them and I am confident that they will accomplish many greater things in their lives more important than winning football games, but the football will certainly be a great memory for all of us and will be an aid towards their success in the future.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
