SIGOURNEY \u2013 Jack Dean Hayes of Hayesville passed away at the Keokuk County Health Center on Feb. 24, at the age of 90. Due to his health and age, Hayes\u2019s brother Thomas was unable to travel to the funeral. The Final Salute, an organization that works to reunite unclaimed remains of veterans with family members, learned that Hayes would not have any family members at his funeral and requested on Facebook that people step in and be his family on the day of his burial. This post was spread 255 times.<\/p>\n

On Friday morning, more than 300 people arrived at Pennington Cemetery, south of Sigourney, to pay their respects. Among them were Hayes\u2019s church friends, members of local veteran organizations, as well as countless strangers from across the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw it on Facebook and I wanted to make sure he had a good send off, and to thank him for his service,\u201d said Darlene Schweitzer, who noted that she didn\u2019t know the deceased.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe assumed that there was going to be a very small turnout, because there was no relatives to be involved at all, so we just thought it\u2019d sort of be a good thing to do,\u201d said John Pytel, a Vietnam veteran who drove down from Columbus Junction with his wife Debra to pay respects.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes you proud of Iowa,\u201d said Schweitzer.<\/p>\n

Hayes was born in Berwyn, Illinois, in 1925. He studied music throughout his life, was classically trained at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, and received a degree in music. He was especially talented at playing the pipe organ. Hayes served in the army from April til October 1959, then served in the Illinois National Guard until 1964.<\/p>\n

Several groups of bikers drove down to show their respect to Hayes, standing in the back of the funeral crowd, dressed in leather jackets, holding American flags.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe help and support veterans. We get calls like this, that you know, the veteran had no family members, or very limited, or non-traveling family members, so we come and stand in for them\u2026(We came) because he has no family. Now, we are his family. Everybody that\u2019s standing here is now his brother or his sister or mom or dad or aunt or uncle, so he will not be laid to rest by himself,\u201d said Pete Sanders, from the Eddyville-based biker group Second Brigade M\/C Iowa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d heard about it personally on Facebook and the request to come participate. We are a riders group, out of Farmington, Iowa, and we thought we\u2019d come to pay our respects to a veteran, which is what we\u2019re all about,\u201d said Chris McCormick, of the American Legion Riders Chapter 231 out of Farmington.<\/p>\n

Christine Hadley, a church friend of Jack Hayes, filmed the funeral to send to his brother Thomas.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was loved God, he loved his country, but he also loved his family,\u201d she said about Hayes. \u201cHis church family, his biological family, his brother and a few nieces and nephews, I believe, are who\u2019s left. Jack was a good man, and he would do anything for anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christian Church of Sigourney Pastor Dan Glandon gave the eulogy, talking about Hayes\u2019s passion for music, love of Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party, and fondness for John Wayne and cowboy movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you know, Jack has no biological family that could be here with or with us today. But, Jack has this family,\u201d said Glandon. \u201cLook around. Absolutely incredible. He\u2019s got all of us, to recognize his contribution, to this great nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know this about Jack: he was a man that genuinely cared for other people,\u201d Glandon said, later in his eulogy. \u201cHe would be at all the funerals. He would support his church family by being at all events that he was able to be at. Not only our church, but prayer groups, Bible studies, usually staying silent, thumbing through his Bible, and listening to every word until he was moved by the Holy Spirit, and then he would talk for the first time of that conversation. That\u2019s the time to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glandon showed the gathered crowd an old, worn Bible, that Hayes had carried around. \u201cI think some folks might see Jack and think that he, like his Bible, was a little tattered and torn and without worldly wealth,\u201d said Glandon. \u201cBut this man knew he was rich beyond all measure. He placed little importance in what the world considered wealth. He knew his wealth was in his faith and in his trusted friends. Those friends got to see his smile and hear his laugh, where others may have only seen a tattered cover.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the eulogy, members of the Iowa National Guard played Taps and folded the flag draped over Hayes\u2019s casket, which was given to Glandon, who will pass it on to Thomas Hayes. The Sigourney American Legion gave Hayes a gun salute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is wonderful. This is very good visibility for everybody who is here,\u201d said Don Lane of the Sigourney American Legion. \u201cAnd it represents that we still have patriotism and Americanism in this great United States of America. This is terrific. It\u2019s the biggest crowd I\u2019ve ever seen in a funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n
