Five Calhoun County Veterans take part in Honor Flight

On Sept. 21, the 19th Brushy Creek Honor Flight, which included five Veterans from Calhoun County, took off for a visit to Washington, D.C.

The Veterans who participated in the latest Honor Flight were James Nelson of Manson, Ronald Hickey of Farnhamville, George Somsky of Lohrville, Robert Gray of Lake City and Robert Laverty of Twin Lakes.

The Sun Country Airlines charter plane took off from the Fort Dodge Regional Airport at 6:30 a.m. and arrived at Dulles International Airport around 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Upon being greeted at the airport, approximately 160 Veterans – along with staff and volunteers – boarded three charter buses for their day trip around the District of Columbia.

Meeting up with U.S. Park police, the buses were escorted to the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before taking off for a city tour. Stops were then made to the World War II Memorial and the United States Marine Corps War Memorial.

The day continued with an arrival at the Arlington National Cemetery to witness the “lowering of the Flag” and to observe the “Changing of the Guard.”

The final stop was for a box supper at the Air Force Monument, following a departure to Dulles Airport. Then, it was “home sweet home” by arriving at the Fort Dodge Airport at 11 p.m. for the Homecoming event.

It was a beautiful day, visiting with friends and family, meeting new acquaintances and making many memories.

The Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight Board of Directors would like to thank all volunteers and supporters who have helped to make their flights an overwhelming success. Without the support from businesses, organizations and citizens, the honor flights would not be possible.

Donations are what make the Honor Flight a reality and are used exclusively for our Veterans to Washington D.C.

All donations are tax deductible, and can be mailed to Brushy Creek Honor Flight Fund at 320 South 12th Street in Fort Dodge. The Brushy Creek Honor Flight Fund asks that you indicate “for Calhoun County Veterans” on your donation.
