Cowboy basketball defeats South Hardin

Christian Gaytan lit it up for 23 points as the Cowboys rolled to a 61-45 season-opening win over South Hardin last Tuesday in Eldora. It was 23-20 in favor of the home team at the break, with the Cowboys then outscoring them 41 points to 22 throughout the second half. That half began with C-G-D going on a 9-0 run aided by back to back threes by Coady Olson & Gaytan.

Gaytan finished 8 of 10 from the field and added no less than four threes to his total. His hot hand also included going 3 of 5 at the line. Connor State joined him in double figures with 13 points on 6 of 10 from the field. Two others were close, as Mateo Martinez and Olson both finished at nine points each. While Jaxon Carpenter chipped in seven points to help the cause. Gaytan racked up 12 boards for a double-double, with Carpenter next at five rebounds and both Martinez and Aiden Harrington at four each. State got his mitts on three caroms, with Olson, Cael Chase and Kaden Bricker all getting one each.

Carpenter dished the pumpkin for four assists, with Gaytan, Martinez and State all at two each and Olson one. State swiped three steals, while Gaytan, Martinez, Carpenter and Harrington all added one apiece. State rounded out his night’s work with two blocked shots. Martinez and Harrington made one each.

Last Friday they lost a road game at Clear Lake 55-36. Complete stats for that game were not yet posted at press time. This past Monday, the red and black easily took care of Eagle Grove 66-34. Unofficial scoring from that game is as follows: State 21, Martinez 16, Gaytan and Carpenter six each, Wilson five, Morales four, Olson three and both Chase and Bricker two points each.
