Led by several players hitting in double figures, the Cowboy basketball team pulled out another two wins in three recent games.
Last Tuesday in Webster City, they played the Lynx into overtime before falling by a 59-55 score. The score was 26-26 at the break, with the two teams still deadlocked at 48-48 at the end of regulation. Three players finished in doubles, led by Christian Gaytan draining 26 points through the hoops. His total included three treys and 5 of 6 at the line. Coady Olson netted 14 points with two three’s and Connor State 10 points. Jaxon Carpenter rounded it out with five points.
State was a demon on the boards, securing 16 rebounds for a double-double. Gaytan grabbed eight rebounds, Olson three and both Carpenter and Aiden Harrington two each. Carpenter dished out four assists, with Gaytan, Olson and Cael Chase all chipping in one each. Gaytan, Olson and Gavin Wilson picked off one steal each, while State made two blocked shots.
They got back on the beam in a 62-38 win at Belmond-Klemme on Thursday. The Broncos led 25-23 at halftime, only to have the Cowboys outscore them 39 points to 13 over the second half. Olson and Carpenter poured in 14 points each, with Coady hitting three treys and Jaxon two. Gaytan finished with 12 points and two three’s.
Gaytan gathered in six rebounds to lead that stat, with Chase having five and both Carpenter and State four each. Harrington and Kaden Bricker got their mitts on three apiece, with Olson, Tyson Berning and Wilson all getting one each. Gaytan and Carpenter both dished the pumpkin for six assists each, with Olson and Wilson at two each and Chase at one. Carpenter and Harrington picked off four steals each, with Gaytan making two and Olson, State and Bricker adding one each to the total.
In a home game on Friday, the team downed visiting St. Edmond 70-63 in another overtime thriller. The Cowboys led 36-27 at the break, and a furious fourth quarter comeback by the Gaels tied it at 61-61 after four quarters. Four players reached double digit scoring in this game. Olson finished with 24 points, all on three’s, Gaytan 13 points, Carpenter 11 points and Mateo Martinez 10 points in coming back into the lineup after missing some action. State added eight and Harrington two. State had eight rebounds, seven of them defensively. He was followed by Olson with seven, Gaytan with four, Martinez with three, Carpenter with two and Harrington with one.
Gaytan handed out three assists, with Martinez, Olson and State adding two and Carpenter one. Olson made three steals, with both Gaytan and Martinez at two each. State made two blocked shots and Martinez one.
The team is now 6-3 overall, with three wins on their last four games. They host Algona this Friday for Winterfest.
