Cowgirls basketball riding five game win streak

The Cowgirl basketball express is running full speed ahead, with a five-game win streak following action last week.

The week started with a 53-38 road win at Webster City. The visitors were up 30-24 at the break, and by the fourth quarter were pulling away to outscore the Lynx 10 points to four. Raven Kinnetz enjoyed a huge game, pouring in 23 points with 12 of those on treys. Quinn Hansch did well for herself in knocking down 12 points, all from long range. Courtney Harle was close at eight points and went 4 of 6 from the line. Jadyn Jondle and Morgan Middleton had four points apiece, and Kendall Lienemann finished with two points.

Harle matched her point total with eight rebounds, and was followed by Middleton with seven and Jondle with five. Lienemann grabbed four caroms, Kinnetz three and both Hansch and Friesleben one each. Harle dished the pumpkin for four assists and Lienemann three. Jondle, Hansch, Friesleben and Middleton all got credit for one assist each. Jondle picked pockets for three steals, wit Kinnetz, Harle and Middleton all getting one each. Middleton used her strength for two blocked shots, with Friesleben getting one.

“This was a big win for us, as we went on the road against an opponent that we matched up pretty evenly with, and came away with the victory,” stated a pleased head coach Adam Vorrie. “They committed a lot of their defensive effort on shutting down Morgan, and we were able to make them pay with our outside shooting. The defensive effort was outstanding after we settled down from a rough first quarter.”

They stayed on the road for a Thursday game at neighboring Belmond-Klemme. They disposed of the Broncos 53-39, taking a 36-10 lead into the locker room. Even though the home team outscored them 29 points to 18 through the second half, they stil had more than enough cushion to take home the win.

Three ladies finished in double digit scoring, led by Kinnetz with 18 points on 50 percent from the field. Middleton drained 14 points through the rims and Hansch made three treys with 12 points total. Harle added four points, Lienemann three points and Jondle two points in support. Middleton enjoyed a double-double in grabbing 13 on the boards, eight of them defensively. Harle and Lienemann both managed to get possession of eight apiece, with Knnetz getting five of them. Hansch and Keller grabbed three caroms each, with Conlon finishing with two and Jondle and Friesleben one each.

Kinnetz, Lienemann and Harle all played unselfishly in dishing out three assists each. Jondle made two and Conlon one. Kinnetz picked off three steals, with Harle and Middleton getting two each. Jondle, Lienemann and Hansch all had one apiece. Middleton away two blocked shots, with Lienemann and Hansch making one block each.

“The Broncos are a really physical team that fought back after we jumped out to an early lead,” said the coach. “We had a great first half and solid defensive effort. The outside shooting was tremendous once again, and continues to punish teams that want to take away our posts. We need to learn to play with a lead, and get some other girls involved in our varsity rotation.”

They trounced St. Edmond 61-27 in a Friday home game, starting with a dominant first quarter of 32 points and building a 46-11 halftime bulge. Kinnetz tossed in 19 points and Hansch 15 points with three buckets from downtown. Middleton and Harle added seven points each, Lexie Lane four points, Jondle three points and Conlon, Lienemann and Friesleben two points each. Jondle was busy in cleaning the glass for eight rebounds, six of them defensively. Middleton got her mitts on four caroms, Conlon three and Kinnetz, Hansch, Harle and Friesleben all two each. Lienemann, Lane and Keller all claimed one rebound as their own.

Jondle, Lienemann and Harle all handed out three assists, with Kinnetz making two and both Lane and Middleton one each. Kinnetz was a force in the guard court in making six steals. Harle grabbed four and Jondle, Lienemann and Hansch all three each. Friesleben and Lane added one steal each to their final line, while Middleton added a blocked shot to hers.

“This was the best shooting performance I have seen from this group in practice or a game,” said Vorrie. “It was great to see us come out a home after so many road games and dominate an opponent like that. We are really excited about the momentum we’ve got going right now, as our schedule has several tough opponents coming up.”

The team is now 7-2 and hosts Algona this Friday for Winterfest Night.
