After having won it in recent years, the C-G-D wrestling team still made a respectable showing at this year’s NCC wrestling tournament on January 25 in Iowa Falls. The team not only finished in second place, but crowned two champions in Reed Abbas (145) and Garrett Seaba (152).
The home team Iowa Falls-Alden won the title with 198.5 points, just edging out the Cowboys at 192.5 points. The finishing order behind those two was as follows: Humboldt 187.5, Hampton-Dumont/CAL 175, Algona 158, Webster City 111.5, Clear Lake 102 and St. Edmond with 14.
Abbas started out with a fall in 1:42 over Jones (Clear Lake), then took a 7-2 win over Cornejo (H-D/CAL). He pinned Howland (IF-A) in 1:43 in the finals. Seaba began his run to the medal stand with a win by fall in 3:46 over Rieck (C.Lake), then stuck Estlund (W. City) in just 30 seconds in the semi’s. He won his bracket with a narrow 9-8 decision over Burke (IF-A).
Tyler Stein (113) took second place, with Remi Hanson (138), Bryce Allen (160), Camden Hanson (182) and Kain Nelson (220) all finishing on the bronze step of the awards stand. Stein started with a bye, then won 7-2 over Currier (C. Lake). He lost a 5-1 decision to Showalter (H-D/CAL) in the finals. Hanson opened with a fall in 3:40 over Vankham (W. City), then lost to Barkema (H-D/CAL) 4-2 in overtime. He came through the backside of the bracket to pin Smith (C. Lake) in 1:44 and win by an 11-0 major decision over Jensen (Humboldt) for his placing.
Allen started his day with an 18-0 technical fall over Hansen (H-D/CAL), then lost the same way 15-0 to Naeve (Humboldt). He came back to beat McWherter (IF-A) by fall in 3:11, then did the same in 3:49 over McKenna (Algona) in his final match. Hanson took an 11-7 victory over Larson (C. Lake) in the first round, then lost 7-0 to Nilles (Humboldt). He won by fall in 4:55 over Warrington (IF-A) on the consolation side, then pinned Long (Algona) in 1:48 to secure his finish. Nelson opened with a quick pin in 38 seconds over Heilskov (H-D/CAL), then lost by fall to Goodell (Humboldt) in the next round. He came back with a fall in just 17 seconds over Miller (W. City) and followed that with another in a mere 22 seconds over Hoversten (IF-A) for his final spot in the bracket.
Ethan Traub (120) and Danny Chavez (285) were both fourth. Highlight matches for them included a 15-5 major decision for Traub over Sadler (W. City) and a fall in 1:02 for Chavez over Koch (H-D/CAL) in the consolation semifinals. Kaeden Langfitt (106), Cale Kirstein (126) and Erick Perez (195) all finished fifth. Highlights included Langfitt winning by fall in 43 seconds over Oliver (IF-A) in his final match of the day, Kirstein taking a 9-0 major decision over Markwardt (C. Lake) in his opening match and Perez pinning Burnette (W. City) in just 45 seconds in his opener.
This past Saturday found the team at Guthrie Center, where they won for the eighth year in a row with 195 points. The rest of the top five of 19 total teams were Van Meter/Earlham at 172, Manson NW Webster at 160, Woodward-Granger at 122 and Greene County at 117.5.
Abbas was the lone champion, with Stein and G. Seaba second. Bryce Allen and Kain Nelson both took third. Abbas followed an opening bye with a 10-3 win over Beane (W. Central Valley), then put away Haynes (VM/E) in :45 to move into the finals. He easily won that match 10-3 over Colby (Panorama) for the gold.
Stein had a bye, then posted a fall in 1:37 over Ganoe (WCV) and followed with an 8-5 decision over Cooney (Nodaway Valley). He lost 6-2 in the finals to Rose (Riverside). Garrett started with a bye, then took a 6-1 win over Harney (W-G). He would pin Muench (SEV) in 1:30, only to lose to Appleseth (Panor.) 7-0 in the finals.
Allen started with a bye, then won by fall in 1:17 over Goodenberger (Panor.). He lost the next match by fall, but rallied to pin Swalla (VM-E) in 3:17 to advance. He pinned Hansen (G. County) in 3:02 in his final match. Nelson had a bye, then won by fall in 1:39 over Schlitz (G. County). He was pinned in his next match, then won by fall in :54 over Barr (AHSTW). He finished the day with a fall in 1:50 over Peterson (MNW).
Cael Ahrens was fourth, with his highlights being two falls in :53 over Rude (Ogden) and in 3:21 over Bennett (Panor.). Rigo Bobadilla and Camden Hanson were both fifth. Rigo scored a fall in 4:26 over Egli (MNW) and a 17-7 major over Conn (Tri-Center) to move him along. Hanson won falls over Huneke (Underwood) in 1:33 and Pevestorf (CR-B) in 1:28 to help himself.
