A new addition to the Clarion Police Department can now be seen cruising around town. It is not a new officer, but rather an impressive new vehicle. As of last month, the black 2019 Chevy Silverado patrol truck has been out and about.
If you have not noticed this new vehicle around Clarion yet, that might be for good reason. It is purposefully quite discreet. Officer Ted Knutson, one of the officers who is largely driving the truck, explains that the vehicle’s light bar is on the inside so you cannot really see it. Also, the markings on the outside of the vehicle are a muted gray color that are not overly noticeable. Knutson points out though that the decals are reflective so motorists could see them at night. “For the most part, it looks just like another vehicle on the street,” Knutson said.
Inside the vehicle, there are more bells and whistles. It features a back-up camera, mounting brackets for rifles, and a tablet with communication capabilities. Under the hood, there is a V-8 engine. While he did not specify exactly how fast it can go, Knutson did mention that there is a different chip set in the engine that allows it to go faster than a regular vehicle. All in all, the vehicle cost $27,000 when purchased new and features almost that same amount in additional gear to fully equip it for law enforcement.
Knutson is happy to have the new truck ready to go and said new vehicles are just a necessity for law enforcement when you put so many miles on them. “Maintenance costs get to be lot. A new vehicle with a warranty is easier to maintain than putting money in an older vehicle over and over again,” he emphasized.
He also added that he is excited about the capabilities of driving a truck. He pointed out the truck will be more versatile than the Chargers or Tahoes that he has driven in the past. “If I need to pick up something like a bike, that will be easier to do now.” The truck will be better to drive in winter conditions. Knutson also confirms that it is a smooth, comfortable ride.
There are still a few more additions that the vehicle will get in the near future, but for now, it is discreetly cruising Clarion.
