At the Clarion City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 4, a public hearing for the sale of city owned property located at 715 1st St SE was held. The city took possession of the property a few months ago. There was only one bid on it from Philip Webb who intends to start construction soon and put up a home on the property. The council authorized the sale of the property.
Two more pay requests were also approved. One was for GM Contracting for the water well project at the amount of $14,499.76. Director of Public Works Jon DeVries said the next payment to GM will probably be the last for that project. The other request was for $24,766.95 to Thompson Electric Company, also for the water well project.
Based on the recommendations of the hotel/motel committee, the council voted to go forth with two grants using hotel/motel funds. One is for $3,200 going to Granny’s Market and the other is for $559 for the Red Shed Event Center.
In other business:
-The council took action on a maturing CD of $117,758.95, investing it at First National Bank for 10 months with a 1% interest rate.
-They discussed some upcoming ordinances pertaining to requirements for accessory buildings, signage, and color restrictions in order to give the city attorney guidance when preparing those in the future.
-Mayor Duane Asbe recommended that the Public Safety Committee meet to discuss COVID safety measures for city employees and representatives.
At the end of the meeting, the council went into closed session for a review of the city administrator per his written request. Under Iowa code, a closed session is allowed “To evaluate the professional competency of an individual.”
