When the Cowboys had enough of losing, and decided to go for their first win of the season, they certainly made up for lost time scoring-wise in pasting Eagle Grove for a 76-0 win in front of a raucous home crowd.
Reed Abbas started the onslaught with a 49-yard fumble recovery for a first quarter score. The team then cranked up their ground game in the second period, with Trent Jergenson galloping 39 yards to score. He was followed by Shane Nelson on a three-yard keeper, with Jergenson scoring again on a one-yard run to paydirt before the half was over.
The third quarter saw Mateo Martinez grab the first of his two TD passes from Conlon. The 21-yard strike was later followed by Jergenson having his number called again on a three-yard carry for a score. The didn’t let their foot off the peddle in the final quarter, as Conlon found his favorite target again for a 44-yard TD reception. Jergenson scored fourth touchdown of the night from five-yards out, and Conlon rumbled in on another keeper from 19-yards away. Abbas wanted more yet, and picked up his second fumble to take off for a 20-yard score to cap it off.
Conlon finished at 7 of 13 for 164 yards (23.4 per completion) with a final QB rating of 159.8. Martinez finished with 128 yards of that himself, with Coady Olson catching a pass for 31 and Bryce Allen one for five. Jergenson rolled up 147 yards on the ground, with Nevan Foss at 68 yards, Conlon at 40 yards and Cale Kirstein at 11 yards.
Brayan Gomez kicked off 11 times for a 41.7-yard average. Kirstein returned one kick for 12 yards.
Foss finished with 6.5 total tackles and two of those as solo efforts. Mason Allen had one solo and 4.0 total stops, Olson two solo and 2.5 total and Abbas one solo and 2.5 total. Jaxon Carpenter had 2.0 total tackles, Kirstein one solo and 2.0 total and B. Allen 2.0 total stops. Martinez and Garrett Seaba both made 1.5 total tackles, with one of Mateo’s a solo effort. Kain Nelson added one solo tackle to his night. Abbas and Nelson had a sack each, while Foss and Carpenter shared in a sack. Abbas, M. Allen and Nelson all had their solo tackles for a loss, while Foss, Carpenter and B. Allen made a partial tackle for loss each.
Abbas recovered three fumbles for 70 total yards of gain, with Carpenter making one pick for a 38-yard return. Erick Perez also recovered a fumble, while Martinez stepped in front of two passes for nine-yards in the takeaway column and Landon Olson one for a five-yard return.
The Cowboys visit the Broncos at Belmond-Klemme this Friday for a first round playoff game.
