Council approves four resolutions, talks fluoridation

In a short Clarion City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 3, the council approved four resolutions as the only agenda items. Two resolutions pertained to the watermain project, with one being a pay request for Reding Gravel & Excavation Company for $408,539.69. The other one was for a pay change order for the same company in the amount of $11,750. Public Works Director Jon DeVries noted that that project is over 70% complete with it scheduled to be finished by June 1.

For the other two resolutions, a public hearing was set for an urban renewal plan amendment for December 1. City Administrator Clint Middleton noted that this is an action they must take to gather TIF money for a planned real estate opportunity. The final resolution appointed Jeremy Stenda Senior Patrolman. He takes over the position from the outgoing Dan Watkins.

In the individual reports section, Middleton noted again that the city continues to pursue a joint building project that would address recreation department needs and Kids Korner daycare needs.

Councilmember Dave Maxheimer brought up a letter he’d received from the dental office of Dr. Pamela Kelch in Clarion. The letter pointed out the fact the city has discontinued fluoridating its water and asked the council to reconsider that. Kelch referred to the benefits of fluoridated water for preventing cavities. DeVries noted that the city is not required to add fluoride to its water. He and Mayor Duane Asbe also referred to research speaking to the negatives of fluoridation. DeVries added that it is something that is being considered for the future water treatment facility.
