Third in a Christmas series of 4 articles
Just because the family is in close proximity, doesn’t mean our celebrations will be the same in 2020.
Jeanette Wenzel, Dows city clerk, is fortunate to have both daughters, husbands, and grandchildren living in the Dows area. “Normally, SheRee (Wharton, daughter who manages the Dows grocery store) has our extended family for Thanksgiving,” said Wenzel, “but not this year. She normally invites more than 30 of us to eat together.”
Thanksgiving Day was hosted by Jeanette and her husband at their home with the daughters and their families. “It will be different,” she said, “but it will still be nice to be together.”
She said their family getting together for Christmas is still ‘up for grabs’.
Wenzel shares her ‘Caramel Rolls’ recipe which is a family favorite and is requested by a number of family members each year.
Caramel Rolls
2 c. lukewarm water
2 packages yeast
½ c. sugar
2 tsp. salt
3 c. flour
1 egg
¼ c. oil & about 3 ½ c. flour
Mix all ingredients in order given. Let rise twice.
Working with half the dough, roll out in rectangle on floured surface. Spread butter, cinnamon and sugar on dough. Roll into log and slice 12 rolls. In a 9×13 pan, put 1 cup whipping cream and 1 cup brown sugar. Put sliced rolls in pan. Repeat with other half of dough. Let rise.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
Can also put in pan without caramel, bake and frost.
