Last Thursday night the Cowboy wrestling team hosted both Clear Lake and Webster City for an NCC dual. They easily defeated the Lions 68-9, but had a tougher time getting by the Lynx in a tight 45-32 win to finish the meet.
Versus the Lions, mat action started at 195 with two straight Lion forfeits leading up to the first contested match at heavyweight. Kain Nelson took an easy pin in 1:19 to give the team a solid 18-0 start. Following a Clear Lake win, Kaeden Langfitt (113) brought points back on the other side of the board with an even quicker fall in just 55 seconds. Ethan Traub (120) kept it going with a pin in 1:26, Cale Kirstein (126) continued the momentum with a technical fall 19-3 at 5:17 on the clock. He used no less than five takedowns and three near-falls to dominate his match.
The Lions would get their last points at 132, and from there it was all Cowboys. Reed Abbas (138) took a 23-8 technical fall in 5:08, Remi Hanson a major decision 11-2 and Bryce Allen (152) a win by fall in 5:01. Garrett Seaba (160) by via pin in just 49 ticks of the clock, Nik Christopherson (170) won by fall in 5:42 after total dominance with six takedowns and two nearfalls and Rafael Jimenez (182) put the cap on it with a 5:39 fall. JV winners included Luke Brownell (6- 2), Erick Perez (by fall) and Luis Delacruz (by fall). Nelson opened with a super quick 20-second fall versus the Lynx, with the visitors taking the next two bouts for a 12-6 advantage. Traub stopped that with a pin in 6:47, followed by Kirstein taking a 12-6 decision on three takedowns and a near-fall. A loss at 132 was followed by a win by Abbas by fall in 2:23 for a 21-17 lead.
That set off a string of four straight wins for the red & black, as R. Hanson won by fall in 3:04, Allen did the same in 1:36 and Seaba also in 1:22. Jimenez stuck his man in 3:20 at 170, which then gave the team enough points to seal the deal even though the Lynx won the final three matches to close the final margin. JV wins went to Mack Seaba (fall), Mason Allen (fall) and Perez (9-3).
On Saturday they traveled to Independence for a dual tournament. They would end up going 2-3 in the five duals wrestled. They defeated Charles City 52-26, as falls were recorded by Rigo Bobadilla (106) in :19, Cale Kirstein (132) in 2:47, Reed Abbas (138) in 1:18, Remi Hanson (145) in 3:31 and Garrett Seaba (160) in 1:15. Ethan Traub (120) won a 12-4 major decision, with Daniel Chavez (285) and Kaeden Langfitt (113) receiving forfeit points.
They easily took care of Waterloo East 64- 18, with pins by Traub (:53), Abbas (:49), Bryce Allen (1:28 at 152) and Chavez (:58). Mack Seaba (160) took a 13-0 major decision, with Bobadilla, Ricardo Gaytan, Kirstein, R. Hanson, G. Seaba and Camden Hanson (220) all receiving wins by forfeit. Two of their loses were close, and could have went either way. They dropped a dual with NU High of Cedar Falls 40-36. Kirstein (4:37), R. Hanson (1:18), G. Seaba (:27), C. Hanson (2:20) and Kain Nelson (:49 at 285) all scored falls, with Abbas winning by forfeit. Crestwood, Cresco edged past the Cowboys 36-31 as Nelson (:53), Traub (1:32), R. Hanson (2:49) and Allen (5:28) all stuck their opponents. M. Seaba took a 15-6 major decision and G. Seaba an 8-2 win in their matches.
The host Mustangs took a 46-30 win over the red & block. Cowboy wins were all by fall and were recorded by R. Hanson (1:21), Allen (1:24), M. Seaba (3:13), G. Seaba (1:28) and Nelson (:30).
