The Cowboys went on the road last Tuesday, traveling east on Highway 3 to meet up with Hampton-Dumont/CAL. They defeated the Bulldogs by a convincing 73-53 score in front of their home crowd. A good first quarter saw the ‘Boys up 17-5, and they kept building on that for a 38-20 advantage going into the locker room.
The team finished at 46.8 percent from the field, 61.5 percent from the line and 43.8 percent from long range. They had 26 total rebounds (17 on defense), 12 total assists, 12 total steals and two blocked shots. No less than four guys were in double digits, led by Jaxon Carpenter with 21 points on 9 of 13 and a trey. Mateo Martinez was close behind at 19 points with two bombs from long range, while Coady Olson scored 14 points with a trey and Jacob Moore 10 points with two treys. Aiden Harrington added five points and Gavin Wilson four points to the total.
Carpenter yanked down eight boards, with Harrington at seven and C. Olson five. Martinez and Wilson got their paws on two caroms each, with Nevan Foss and Moore claiming one apiece. C. Olson dished the pumpkin for four assists, with Martinez making three and both Carpenter and Wilson handing out two each. Landon Olson had one assist. Martinez and Carpenter used their quickness to make four steals each, with Moore in on three and Harrington one. Harrington and Moore had a blocked shot each on their final stat lines.
Stats were not yet posted for two other games. The team lost to Webster City 64-56 last Monday, February 8 and followed the win at Hampton with a 63-55 home victory over Southeast Valley.
In a summary of stats from an earlier contest, they lost 70-63 to Algona. Connor State netted 26 points, Martinez 18 points and Carpenter 10 points to do the bulk of the scoring. State grabbed nine rebounds, with Martinez at six and both Carpenter and Harrington at five each. Carpenter led the assists column with six, Martinez the steals column with three and State the blocked shots column with three.
