Martinez, State lead Cowboy final season stats

The 2020-21 Cowboy basketball team finished 11-11 overall with a 5-8 North Central Conference record. Clear Lake on the league title at 12-2, followed by Algona at 11-3 and Humboldt at 9-4. The Cowboys finished fifth.

The team scored 1,380 points on 548 of 1,298 shots from the field for 42.2 percent. They made 187 of 325 free throws for 57.5 percent and 97 of 382 three-pointers for 25.4 percent. Mateo Martinez scored 366 points on 145 of 330 shots from the field for an average of 16.7 ppg. Connor State scored 322 points on 140 of 262 shots for an average of 17.0 ppg. Coady Olson scored 225 points on 87 of 265 shots for an average of 10.2 ppg. Jaxon Carpenter scored 204 points on 71 of 176 shots for an average of 9.3 ppg. Aidan Harrington scored 112 points on 49 of 109 shots for an average of 5.1 ppg.

Jacob Moore scored 64 points on 22 of 54 shots for an average of 4.0 ppg. Gavin Wilson scored 31 points on 11 of 30 shots for an average of 1.5 ppg. Nevan Foss scored 28 points on 13 of 25 shots for an average of 1.7 ppg. Landon Olson scored 11 points on four of 14 shots for an average of 0.9 ppg. Cael Chase added nine points, Tyson Berning seven points and Thane Jackson one point to complete the scoring column.

Ranked by field goal percentage, regardless of minutes played or points scored, the order would be: State 53.4 percent; Foss 52.0 percent; Harrington 45.0 percent; Martinez 43.9 percent; Moore 40.7 percent; J. Carpenter 40.3 percent; Wilson 36.7 percent; C. Olson 32.8 percent; L. Olson 28.6 percent; Chase 28.6 percent and Berning 14.3 percent.

In three-pointers, Martinez made 31 of 103 and C. Olson 31 of 136 from long range. Moore made 14 of 42 and J. Carpenter 14 of 65 as the only others in double digits. Five others scored on at least one three-pointer. Ranked by percentage, regardless of minutes or points, the order would be: State 66.7 percent; Moore 33.3 percent; Martinez 30.1 percent; C. Olson 22.8 percent; J. Carpenter 21.5 percent; Harrington 16.7 percent; L. Olson 16.7 percent; Berning 15.4 percent and Wilson 14.3 percent.

J. Carpenter made 48 of 77 from the line, followed by Martinez at 45 of 64, State at 40 of 77, C. Olson at 20 of 35 and Harrington at 13 of 35 in the top five. Seven others sank at least one or more from the line. Ranked by percentage, regardless of minutes or points, the order would be: Moore 100 percent; Wilson 80.0 percent; Martinez 70.3 percent; J. Carpenter 62.3 percent; C. Olson 57.1 percent; State 51.9 percent; Thane Jackson 50.0 percent; L. Olson 50.0 percent; Harrington 37.1 percent; Foss 33.3 percent; Berning 33.3 percent and Chase 25.0 percent.

The team had 662 total rebounds, of which 405 were defensive and 257 offensive. Ranked by total rebounds, the order would be: State 154; Harrington 152; J. Carpenter 114; C. Olson 73; Martinez and Wilson 48 each; Foss 26; Moore 23; Chase 12; Berning six; L. Olson four and Preston Gardner two. Ranked by defensive rebounds, the order would be: Harrington 96; State 95; J. Carpenter 76; C. Olson 49; Wilson 26; Martinez 23; Foss and Moore 13 each; Chase six; Berning five; Gardner two and L. Olson one. Ranked by offensive rebounds, the order would be: State 59; Harrington 56; J. Carpenter 38; Martinez 25; C. Olson 24; Wilson 22; Foss 13; Moore 10; Chase six; L. Olson three and Berning one.

The top 11 in assists were: J. Carpenter 78, Martinez 54, C. Olson 39, Harrington 34, State 22, Wilson 12, Moore nine, L. Olson and Chase five each and Foss and Berning one each.

The top 12 in steals were: Martinez 66, J. Carpenter 57, Harrington 28, C. Olson 25, State 23, Moore nine, Berning six, Chase five, Wilson four, Foss three, L. Olson two and Nick Carpenter one.

The top eight in blocked shots were: State 53, J. Carpenter 15, Harrington 11, Moore four, Martinez, C. Olson and Foss two each and Chase one.

In conference games only, the team was fifth in points scored. They were second in both field goals made and field goal percentage. They were first in offensive rebounds and fifth in total rebounding. Individually, Martinez was fifth in scoring at 208 points followed by State in sixth at 202 points and C. Olson 17th at 134 points. State was fifth in field goal percentage at 56.6, followed by Martinez in 17th and Harrington in 19th. State was seventh in total rebounds with 88, followed by Harrington in eighth with 87 and J. Carpenter 19th with 62.

J. Carpenter was fifth in the league in assists with 48, followed by Martinez in a tie of 17th with 26. Martinez led the conference in steals with 40, with J. Carpenter second at 35. State was second in blocked shots with 32, followed by J. Carpenter with eight and Harrington tied for 14th at five (watch next week’s Monitor for coach Lantzky’s comments on the season).
