The IHSSA State Speech Contest was held at Forest City High School on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Senior Kara Legleiter, daughter of Rodney and Sally Legleiter, started the day with a prose reading titled “The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes” by Gary Rubinstein and Mark Pett. The judges gave her two division I ratings and one division II rating for an overall division I rating. Kara ended the day with a radio news broadcast for which she received all division II ratings.
Senior Nicole Lorenzo, daughter of Anthony and Martha Lorenzo, also took two programs to the state contest. The first, a poetry reading titled "Soy Quien Soy (I Am Who I Am)" included self-written poetry that earned her three division I ratings. The second was a literary program titled "!Viva México!" -which also contained self-written pieces- that earned her three division I ratings as well.
Senior Jaidyn Lockwood, daughter of Jessica McVay, performed a literary program titled "Rape Culture" which earned her two division I ratings and one division II rating for an overall division I rating. And Freshman Ashley Fennel read a collection of poems titled "Dog Tails" which earned her three division I ratings.
The team took six programs to state and came home with five division I rankings. "I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of this team of well-spoken young women," reported Coach Tamara EnTin, "and grateful for all those who came to support the girls in Forest City."
