CGD board approves two resolutions ahead of building projects

At the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education meeting Monday night, two public hearings were held pertaining to the upcoming building projects of the baseball/softball complex and MS/elem gym. The first was a resolution supporting the proposed use of SAVE revenue for an athletic facility infrastructure project. The second was a resolution supporting the proposed issuance of approximately $6,200,000 school infrastructure sales, services and use tax revenue bonds. Both measures passed. This will allow the district to use revenues from the one-cent sales tax for these facility projects. The tax levy will not increase to fund the work.

School Board President Beth Severson reported on a recent meeting about Kids Korner Daycare. An outside consultant, Dan Levi from Black Hawk County, was recently engaged to collect data and put together a financial and business plan.  Representatives from the city, county, school district, and several major area businesses attended the meeting to give input. The business plan is expected within a couple weeks.

In the superintendent’s report, Joe Nelson reiterated that the district will require masks through the regular school year, ending May 25. Masks will not be required at summer school starting in June, however, since that is not mandatory. Nelson explained that summer school or “summer learning camp” will be starting on June 7, running mornings for three weeks. Satellite schools will be held in Dows and Goldfield. Elementary Principal Tricia Rosendahl said they are already seeing lots of interest in summer school. Nelson also updated on the facility projects. Bid-letting for the gym and baseball/softball complex is planned for June.

In work agreements and contracts, Ryan Nail was approved as JV boys basketball coach. Resignations were approved from Connie Hinton (bus driver) and Nikki Conlon (dance coach). In other contract changes, Alayna Watts will transition from asst. dance coach to head dance coach, and Jason Berning will move from JV boys basketball coach to head coach. Summer help contracts were also approved. A shared social worker position with Eagle Grove was approved. Duties for this position at CGD will include migrant liaison/district contact for community services. Natalie Sachs, a recent UNI graduate, will be taking this position.

The board also approved six requests for early graduation for next school year. These students will have completed enough credits to graduate at the end of the first semester.

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, Nelson thanked the CGD board for all that they do. He said, “Your hard work does not go unnoticed.”

At the end of the meeting an exempt session to discuss classified staff and administration contracts was held.
