CGD retirees honored at ceremony

At the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Teacher Appreciation Gathering last Wednesday, three retirees were honored for nearly 100 years of combined service. The retirees this year included David Ackerman, Pat O’Brien and Denise Ulven.

David Ackerman has taught in the district for 27 years as the vocal instructor for 6-12th grades. He noted that his childhood piano teacher was the one who most inspired him musically. In his time at CGD, Mr. Ackerman helped usher in an active era in the music department including adding vocal lessons and participation in large group contest. He helped put on an impressive 13 musicals and 14 variety shows over the years. He adds that he will most miss working with the staff and the kids. Ackerman says he plans to be available to the next vocal teacher and stay active in the district as his son enters high school.

Pat O’Brien has taught for over 40 years, 31 of those being for the CGD District. Mr. O’Brien teaches middle school science and has coached many sports during his tenure. He said that even though he’s retiring, he looks forward to continuing to coach golf and substitute teach within the district. He also plans to spend plenty of time with his family.

Middle school reading literature teacher Denise Ulven is retiring from the district after 32 years. Mrs. Ulven’s roots in teaching are traced all the way back to playing school with her sister as a child. She said, “I have always enjoyed working with middle schoolers because they are curious, and they still like to use their imaginations.” About her subject area, Ulven added, “Knowing how to read is not only a valuable lifetime skill, but also a great way to relax.” She emphasized that she will miss the daily energy of the classroom in addition to her middle school work family. Mrs. Ulven plans to sub within the district and spend time with her kids and grandkids in retirement.

Dwight Tew also resigned from his position as district Transportation Director after 32 years.

The CGD District emphasized to its retirees, “Thank you for your years of dedication to our students. You will always be part of our family. We wish you many happy, healthy years of retirement in your future.”
