The Cowboy track & field team traveled to Hampton last Thursday for the NCC meet. Clear Lake took the team title with 191 points, followed by: Webster City 126.50, Humboldt 126, Hampton-Dumont/CAL 69.50, Iowa Falls-Alden 62, Algona 62, St. Edmond 58 and the Cowboys 43.
Highlights included Nevan Foss grabbing second in the high jump at 5’ 10”, Christian Gaytan finishing fourth in 15.73 in the 110 hurdles then anchoring the shuttle hurdle relay with teammates Allen, Foss and Gardner to fourth in 1:09.22.
“The meet was dominated by Clear Lake,” stated head coach Ben Lindaman. “They have a ton of talent and depth. The top place finishers in about every event were either from Clear Lake, Webster City or Humboldt. It was very tough competition at the top end. The Cowboys had Nevan as the highest placewinner, with our best individual running events being Christian in the high hurdles, Mateo in the 100 dash and Isaiah in the 1600 and 3200. It was nice to see him break five minutes in the 1600 for the first time. Our best relay came from the shuttle guys placing fourth. As a team, we have a lot of holes in the mid-distance and distance events. To be good as a whole team, we need to convince the kids we need just as many 400 to 3200 runners as we do sprinters. Our field events are young but promising. We need to develop more hurdlers as well. We are competing with a lot of sophomores and freshmen against teams with seniors and juniors. Hopefully in a couple years we will be more competitive as a whole team when our roster has juniors and seniors.”
