The Cowboy golf team took a tri-meet last Tuesday at Clarmond, defeating both Algona and Central Springs. The Cowboys finished with a 185 total, followed by the Bulldogs at 188 and the Panthers at 202. Jacob Moore was medalist with a 43, and Cale Kirstein the runner-up with 46. Other counters were Tyson Berning and Camden Hanson with identical 48 scores. Other cards were turned in by Elic Fjetland at 49 and Colin Kirstein at 52.
The Cowboy JV also won over Algona 209-244. JV scores were: Jackson Beisel 50, Landen Kakacek 50, Coady Olson 54, Garrett Seaba 55, Carson Harle 56 and Mack Seaba 58.
“We played just good enough to win,” stated head coach Pat O’Brien. “Landen’s score was a personal best. He is getting better each time out. Most of the rest are pretty inconsistent. If we could free our minds and just enjoy the experience we would be better off. We will get better, I know that. We just need to be patient and not try to force it.”
A tri-meet Thursday at Dows saw Humboldt win with a 166 followed by Hampton-Dumont/CAL at 174 and the Cowboys at 180. Moore was the runner-up medalist with a 42, followed in counters by Fjetland at 43, Beisel at 47 and both Cale Kirstein and Hanson at 48 (only one needed). Berning shot a 49 for the other varsity score.
JV scores were: M. Seaba 47, Harle 47, G. Seaba 48, Olson 49, Nesheim 51 and Kakacek 54.
“We are looking to get our top two players to cut a couple of strokes off and then get some help from the other four,” said O’Brien. “We are capable but don’t seem to be ‘tournament tough’ right now. Going into the postseason, we are wanting to put it all together at the right time/ If not, we will have to settle for building confidence and motivation for next year. That remains to be seen. I believe in these guys, so you just watch!”
He felt the JV posted a nice total (191). “It will be a dog fight for positions next year!” said the coach. “These are some really hungry dogs too. Anyone who puts in the time and works on their scoring clubs could light this team up next year. As always, all positions are open and I don’t care what the history is. You want it, you go get it!”
