Iowa River Players plan volunteer ‘boot camp’

Recently, the Iowa River Players (IRP) Community Theater in Rowan completed their post-pandemic re-opening with the hit show, "Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood".  Director Luanne Krabbe said, “We were all so glad to be back onstage and with our audience after being closed during 2020.”

IRP has one more show scheduled for the 2021 season. They had actually begun rehearsals back in February 2019 for a comedy about a young couple whose live-in in-laws have declared war on each other. "Squabbles" is the appropriate title. (Krabbe added that there is still one opening in the cast and many in the crew.) The schedule will be announced according to CDC guidelines for the Fall.

Before IRP begins again with set construction, rehearsals and all the other behind-the-scenes planning and hard work that will appear as if by magic on opening night of Squabbles, they are reaching out for your support.

Krabbe explains, “Our board of directors is planning a day to invite the public to be a part of the excitement we feel in making theater happen in our home area. Even if we have not previously met, even if you’re not sure about your future in show biz, even if you have extensive experience and could teach us a thing or two, we invite you to sample the kind of work that goes on to produce a play at Iowa River Players.”

The day of volunteering, which the board is dubbing “boot camp,” will start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31. Volunteers will get a coffee & donut-fueled tour of the backstage, scenic, costume and tech areas, guided by experienced technicians. You’ll get to choose a specific area to try your hand at theater stuff.

A little after noon, the group will break for a chef-prepared refreshment of pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw, baked beans, seafood salad and homemade cake and then resume efforts to spruce up and fix-up in the afternoon. Finally, an appropriate selection of 5:00 refreshments will be served before you wend your homeward way.

Krabbe said, “We eagerly look forward to your response. Call or text (319) 231-7828 to reserve your spot so we can adequately plan the delicious offerings!”

The Iowa River Players Board Planning Committee is made up of Luanne Krabbe, Steve Froehlich, Becky Ahrendsen, Sarah Abernathy, Nancy Huisinga & Angela Wesselink.
