Cowgirls defeat Clear Lake, Eagle Grove

Last Tuesday in a home match, The Cowgirls defeated the Lions in NCC play 3-1 with set scores of: W25-10, L 25-19, W27-25 and W25-13. Team serving was at 89.9 percent, with Clarissa Hasty at 21 of 21 (three aces) and Summer Traub at 18 of 20 (three). Indy Johnson was 12 of 15, Karlee Lehman 10 of 10 (two), Brooke Askelsen 10 of 12 (two) and Lexie Lane 9 of 11 (one).

Lehman set for 19 assists and Nikki Kapka 17. Lane pounded 25 kills, followed by Kennedy Trca and Traub at six apiece. Hasty made four and both Johnson and Delia Swanson one each. Four players made double digit digs, led by B. Askelsen at 21 followed by Hasty at 19, Lane at 17 and Johnson at 11. Traub was close to joining them at nine, with Lehman making six, Kapka and Trca four each and Swanson two. Lane went above the net for three solo blocks, with Kapka and Swanson at one apiece.

“The Cowgirls did what they needed to do to come up with the win,” stated head coach Katrina TerHark. “The way we finished the night is the way we need to start every set. We took care of business and looked great. That is the intensity and determination we need all the time.”

Thursday saw them host Eagle Grove in coming away with a three set victory by scores of 25-11, 25-6 and 25-10. Team serving was at 92.9 percent, with Traub at 19 of 21 (six). Lane went 15 of 16 (six), Johnson 9 of 9 (one) and Hasty 8 of 10 (three). B. Askelsen and Lehman were both 7 of 7.

Kapka set for six assists, while Lane led the offense with 10 kills. Hasty and Traub made three each. Trca and Emma State two each and Kapka one. B. Askelsen had eight digs on defense, with Hasty, Johnson, Lane and Lehman all adding six saves of the ball each. Traub had two and Kapka one.

“What a great night for the Cowgirls to get a victory,’ said TerHark. “It’s homecoming week and also parent night and senior night. Thank you seniors for all the time and dedication you have given to the program for the last four years.”

On Saturday at Forest City, they won one match in the tournament by defeating Roland-Story 2-1 with scores of W21-19, L21-19 and won W15-13. Hasty was 14 of 15 (four) in serves. Lehman had 10 assists and Lane six kills. Hasty and Trca had five each.

They lost to Saint Ansgar 2-1 by set scores of L24-14, W21-11 and L16-14, Hasty was 14 of 15 (one). Lehman had eight assists and Lane 12 kills and 13 digs.

They lost to Central Springs 2-1 by scores of W21-18, L21-17 and L17-15. B. Askelsen had nine assists and Lane nine kills, Hasty and 10 digs.

They lost to Lake Mills 21-17 and 21-8. Hasty was 10 of 10 with Lane making four kills. Hasty had 15 digs and B. Askelsen 12.

They lost to Spencer 2-1 by scores of L21-17, W21-14 and L15-8. Hasty was 9 of 10 and B. Aslelsen 8 of 8 (two). Lehman had nine assists and Traub eight kills. B. Askelsen had 10 digs and Hasty nine.

For the day, Hasty was 38 of 40 with five digs. Traub was 25 of 28 (four), Lehman 18 of 18, Lane 16 of 18 (three), Johnson 16 of 18 and B. Askelsen 14 of 15. Lehman had 34 total assists, with Kapka at 16 and B. Askelsen at 10.

B. Askelsen had 46 total digs, with B. Askelsen at 45, Lane at 37, Johnson at 30 and Traub at 17. Lane made 36 total kills, with Traub at 21 and Hasty at 19.

“We came out and had a great start to the morning,” said the coach. “We played consistently and got our hands on some nets which helped defensively. When the set got tight, we were able to get a pass to put the ball away. As the day went on we looked really good and then didn’t play so well. We weren’t able to come through in third sets to clinch a win. We will continue to work to get better.”
