Census 2020: Wright County, Clarion down

 

After what seems like months of delays, the results of the 2020 census are in, and overall, Wright County saw a slight decrease in population when compared to 10 years ago.

The county’s official population is listed at 12,943, a decrease of 286 residents from the 13,229 figure at the 2010 census. Among individual communities, most Wright County cities saw a decrease in population. Clarion had a 1.4% population decline with the numbers going from 2,850 in 2010 to 2,810 in 2020. Goldfield went down just one person from the 2010 census to a population of 634 in 2020. Dows went from 158 people to 123 last year. Woolstock lost 24 people to arrive at a population of 144 in 2020. Rowan went from 158 in 2010 to 123 in 2020 and Galt dropped 17 people from 2010 for a 2020 population of 521.  

Both Belmond and Eagle Grove saw increases in their population according to last year’s census. Belmond went up 100 people from 2010 to land at 2,463 last year. Eagle Grove saw a slight increase of .5%, growing by 18 people from 2010 to 3,601 in 2020.

Wright County saw a significant increase in diversity. There was a 303.8 percent increase in residents who identify as members of two or more races. As of 2020, that number is 844, or 6.5% of the total population, up from 209 at the 2010 census. Among minority groups, Hispanic or Latino makes up the largest percentage of the total population at 18.5% (2,394 residents), followed by Other at 10.2% (1,319 residents) with Black, American Indian, Asian, and Pacific Islander all coming in with less than 1% of the county’s population.

According to the figures, Wright County saw a 4.1 percent decrease in total housing units from the 2010 census, with 6,260 as of 2020 compared to 6,529 a decade ago.
