At a tri-meet last Tuesday, the Cowgirl volleyball team defeated Pocahontas Area 25-13 and 25-16 and also conference foe Algona by scores of W25-20, L25-21 and W15-11. Versus the Indians, team serving was at 93.9 percent efficiency with Brooke Askelsen at 12 of 12 (four aces). Clarissa Hasty was 9 of 10 (two), Lexie Lane 8 of 8 (two), Karlee Lehman 7 of 7, Summer Traub 6 of 7 and Indy Johnson 4 of 5 (one).
Nikki Kapka and Lehman set for nine assists each, with Lane pounding 10 successful kills. Traub made six, Kennedy Trca five, C. Hasty three and Delia Swanson one. C. Hasty and B. Askelsen led the defensive effort with eight digs apiece, followed by Lane at five, Traub at three and Johnson, Lehman and Trca all at two saves of the ball each. Kapka added one to the total.
Kapka also went vertical for two solo blocks. Trca made two assists, with Kapka, Swanson and Lane all at one each.
“The Cowgirls came out with good energy to start the night,” stated head coach Katrina TerHark. “We need to continue to see this from everyone. It was a total team effort.”
Versus the Bulldogs, set scores were W25-20, L25-21 and W15-11. Serving percentage was at 93.6, with Johnson and Lehman at 11 of 12 with Indy finding two aces. C. Hasty was 10 of 11 (two), B. Askelsen 8 of 9 (two), Traub 6 of 9 (three) and Lane 5 of 8 (three). Lehman made eight assists as primary setter, with Johnson and Kapka getting four each and B. Askelsen three. Lane and Trca had one each.
Lane recorded eight kills, with C. Hasty at six, Trca at five and Kapka and Traub at two each. Lane had nine digs, followed by Lehman at eight, B. Askelsen at seven, C. Hasty at six and Johnson at four. Trca had one save of the ball. Traub went above the net for two solo blocks, with Lane and Trca getting one each. C. Hasty had a block assist.
“The Cowgirls did a nice job of responding and working together,” said the coach. “We missed some serves in the first two sets, but then were able to start strong in the third set to come out with the victory.”
Thursday night saw them on the road at Iowa Falls-Alden. They defeated the Cadets in four sets by scores of 25-16, L25-15, W25-20 and W25-11. Team serving was at 95.5 percent, with Johnson a great 24 of 24 and C. Hasty 20 of 20 (three). Lehman was 10 of 10 (one), Sawyer Morrical 9 of 9 (one)Lane 9 of 9 (one), B. Askelsen 7 of 7 (two) and Traub 6 of 9.
Kapka made eight assists. Lehman five and Ady Askelsen three. B. Askelsen and Johnson had two apiece, with C. Hasty and Traub setting one ball each. Kapka led in kills with five, followed by Trca at four and C. Hasty at three. Traub added two and Johnson one to the total. Three ladies finished in double digits in digs. B. Askelsen made 12, while Lane and Lehman had 11 each. C. Hasty and Johnson made seven each, Traub four, A. Askelsen three and Kapka two saves of the ball. Traub made two solo blocks, with C. Hasty and Lane getting in on one each.
In a Saturday tournament hosted by Boone, the Cowgirls lost to the host Toreadors by set scores of 21-12 and 21-18. Team serving was at 90.9 percent efficiency, with C. Hasty, M. Hasty and Johnson all at 7 of 7. Kapka and Sydney Friesleben made four assists each, with Lane nailing four kills, B. Askelsen and Friesleben had five digs each.
Waverly-Shell Rock defeated them by scores of 21-16 and 21-10. Serving was at 88.9 percent, with M. Hasty at 7of 7 and Johnson at 5 of 5. Kapka had seven assists and Lane four kills. B. Askelsen made 12 digs and Friesleben ten.
They defeated Ames by scores of 22-20 and 21-18. Team serving was at 94.9 percent. Johnson was 11 of 11, Lane had 10 successful spikes for points and Friesleben saved seven balls.
They defeated Forest City by scores of W24-22, L21-17 and W15-9. Team serving was 94.9 percent, with Lane at 12 of 13 (one). Friesleben set the ball for 18 assists, and both Swanson and Lane tallying six kills each. B. Askelsen and Lane had 13 digs each and Friesleben ten.
They lost to NCC foe Algona by scores of L23-21, W21-19 and L15-12. Team serving was at 93.2 percent, with Lane at 13 of 13 (three). Friesleben made 14 assists, Lane had eight kills and also 18 digs to match that.
Totals for the day in their last Saturday tourney of the season show M. Hasty at 47 of 51 serves (five). Johnson was 41 of 42, B. Askelsen 24 of 24, Traub 23 of 26 (four) and Friesleben at 13 of 14 (one).
Friesleben set for 20 assists and Kapka 11. Lane led in kills with 27, followed by Traub with 14 and both Trca and Swanson at six each.
B. Askelsen led in digs with 49, followed by Lane at 44 and Friesleben at 38. Johnson had 26 and M. Hasty at 19.
“The team did some really good things,” said TerHark. “We played with some great teams but still played inconsistent against some average teams. We need to figure out how to put everything to be consistent. When we get a lead we need to keep the lead.”
