Cowgirls drop two last week as regular season play wraps up

CGD Cowgirl Volleyball wrapped up regular season play with two tough losses on the road. On Tuesday, it was a non-conference match-up with the Cardinals of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in Garner. The Cowgirls jumped out to an impressive start by taking the first set on senior night with a 25 to 14 margin. The next two sets would end with an identical score of 25-19 in favor of the Cardinals. Set number four would push both squads' intensity levels and finished with a 28-26 final and a three set to one victory for GHV.

On Thursday, the Cowgirls hit the road once again to face off against North Central Conference foe, Humboldt. With a victory, the Cowgirls would guarantee a tie for a share of the conference title. The Wildcats would not be denied this year and swept the Cowgirls in three straight sets. “Humboldt came ready to go. They came out and attacked and that is what we needed to do. We started the first two sets down too far and found ourselves digging out of a hole. The third set we came out strong, but we couldn't stay in it for the entire set. They (Humboldt) gave us some opportunities to get on a run with their missed serves. We just couldn’t run with the momentum enough to pull out a set,” stated Cowgirl head coach Katrina TerHark.

The Cowgirls had seven ace serves, three from Lexi Lane, two from Clarissa Hasty, and one each from Summer Traub and Indy Johnson. Lane led the Cowgirls with seven of the seventeen total kills for CGD. The Cowgirls finish third in the NCC behind Humboldt and Webster City. They took their first step to the state tournament with a round one matchup with NCC rival Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Monday. Check next week’s Monitor for a full recap.
