If there’s anything to look forward to in the cold, shivering season of winter in Clarion, Iowa, it definitely isn’t shoveling piles of snow, or the freezing wind slapping you right in the face right as you step foot outside…it’s the CGD winter sports season!
After many weeks of training together, and preparing for the beginning of the winter season, the Cowboys and Cowgirls of basketball, wrestling, and cheer presented themselves in front of their fans right in the CGD gymnasium. Encouraging and motivating words were preached by each coach as they introduced the squads for the winter sports teams.
Starting with girls basketball, the Cowgirls scrimmaged each other with play-by-play corrections and inputs from head coach Liz Ennis. The Cowgirls orchestrated one of their famous drills, the Kentucky Layup, in front of the immersed crowd, cheering for each player as they successfully executed the drill. By the end of their drills, the girls competitively scrimmaged each other, proving their dedication and focus to the game. The Cowgirls communicated well with each other as the match progressed, and with minimal mistakes made, the girls promptly reacted and regrouped. The Cowgirls kick off the season on Monday, November 22 at 7:30 PM, as they host Southeast Valley.
After the introductions of the cheer squads, with brand new members joined, the Cowboys wrestling team marched off the stands and stood tall in front of the crowd. As each wrestler stated their name and grade, the fans cheered each Cowboy on. The wrestling team will begin their season with, what some might say, an undeserving rank as they sit at 24th. However, head coach Dan Gabrielson is ready for the season to kick off as he feels they will prove themselves this season. Their first meet will commence on Thursday, December 2, as they host Iowa Falls-Alden and Hampton-Dumont-CAL at 6:00 PM.
Last, but certainly not least, as the basketball team stood with the most players presented, the Cowboys were announced by head coach Jason Berning. Within moments, the players were already on the court and ready for play. And just like that, the ball was tossed and the competitive match began. The Cowboys displayed their eagerness and attentiveness to the game, providing the spectators with a mere taste for what’s to come in the upcoming 2021/2022 season. The Cowboys will leap into the season, shooting for a victory as they will face the Eagles at Eagle Grove on Monday, November 29 at 7:30 PM.
