Doubling the lead, and tripling their wins, the Cowgirls defeat St. Edmond Gaels in conference-opener.
The Cowgirls garnished the scoreboard Friday night as they earned their third victory in the season. Hosting the St. Edmond Gaels, the Cowgirls sought after a crucial win as they currently lead the standings for the North Central conference. The only undefeated team in the North Central conference, the Cowgirls continued their success gallantly over the Gaels on Friday night.
The Cowgirls maintained a comfortable lead after a close end to the first quarter, standing only three points ahead of the Gaels. As the match progressed, the Cowgirls’ defense improved. Only allowing one single point in the second quarter, the Cowgirls increased their lead by nine, ending the first half 20-9. As the second half came around, the Cowgirls piled up the points on the scoreboard, adding 16 in the third quarter, and 10 in the fourth. With the sum of buckets made for the Gaels in the second half, which weren’t even greater than the amount of buckets made for the Cowgirls in the third quarter alone, the stats speak for themselves as the Cowgirls sit in first place with a +19 difference.
The Cowgirls have managed to win three straight games. Within the trilogy of victories to the start of the season, the communication between the Cowgirls has been clear. “Communication is something I stress as a coach,” Coach Liz Ennis explains. “I want my players to always be talking on defense. If players see things that work well on offense, they will speak up and help their teammates recognize that.” Coach Ennis applauds her assistant coaches as they provide one-on-one coaching with players, stating, “I also like that I have assistant coaches who are great with talking individually with players on the bench. We really try to talk with players in practice, and I think it carries over to games and also makes the players recognize the importance of it on the floor amongst themselves.”
Ready to go 2-0 for conference competitions, and 4-0 for the season, the CGD Cowgirls are set to take on the 0-4 Webster City Lynx, at Webster, on Friday, December 10, at 6:15 PM.
