Cowboys comeback, leaving Lynx 53-42

Following the Cowgirls tight race for victory, the Cowboys fell into the same situation.

Hoping to capture a 3-0 streak, the Cowboys worked for a hardfought comeback over the Lynx. With a history of 3-28, the rivalry between CGD and Webster was clear, as the Cowboys strove for success. As the Lynx started off strong, though only two points ahead of the Cowboys, a timeout was called by Coach Jason Berning with 1:42 left for the first quarter. After another timeout followed, the Cowboys aimed for a comeback to end the first quarter. The Lynx had other ideas, however, as they ended the first quarter with a 20-16 lead.

“The big difference between JV and Varsity from my perspective is the speed of the game,” stated JR Nevan Foss, who managed to tie the game 20-20 despite the differences in speed and intensity. The Cowboys continued their battle for the ball, but were unable to close the second quarter with the lead. Instead, the Lynx won the first half and finished the second quarter with a 27-24 lead. Just like the Cowgirls, however, the game was nowhere near over.

Starting the third quarter with speed and intensity just like the first, the Cowboys took charge in the third quarter. SR Tyson Berning tied the game to tip-off the third quarter. As the third quarter continued, the Cowboys grasped onto the lead, securing it for the remainder of the third quarter as it ended 40-34. The fourth quarter saw the stacking of points from the Cowboys, as their lead increased and finally started to take off. However, the ending could have been completely different if it wasn’t for a major mistake from the Lynx, after two missed free-throws to make it a one score game with 5:47 left. The Cowboys took charge again, and capitalized. After a timeout was called with 3:31 left, the Cowboys led the game 44-36. The Lynx continued their drive, as well, as they scored six points while the Cowboys only scored two. Just minutes left, the game was 46-42, anybody’s game yet again. The game could only have one winner, and that was the Cowboys, beating the Lynx for the second time this year, as their first win since 2014 was during the 2020/2021 season on January 22, winning 72-62.

Saturday night’s matchup saw 17 points from SR Connor State, 11 rebounds, and five assists. SR Jaxon Carpenter delivered 13 points for the Cowboys with six assists and five rebounds. SR Coady Olson delivered 11 points as well, helping the lead of the Cowboys over the Lynx.

Winning their third game against Webster City, and securing their third win of the season with no losses conceded, the Cowboys are set to take on the undefeated Clear Lake Lions. While both teams stand 3-0, only one team will manage to walk out with a 4-0 record. Tip-off is set to begin at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, December 14, at Clear Lake.
