In history, horses were given the name “bronco” when they were known to be untrained or only slightly trained. This term, which originated in Mexico, was also used by others. They were the American cowboys, and they used them to ride on during rodeos to feature amazing performances.
This historical fact mirrors what took place on Thursday night for the CGD Cowboys, as they controlled the game from beginning to end, entertaining the crowd while the unprepared Broncos, like the untrained horses, were no match for the Cowboys. History definitely repeats itself.
The Cowboys started the game slower than usual, but that was brief as they outclassed the Broncos 18-2 in the first quarter. The second quarter saw a similar drive from the Cowboys, as they put away another 16 points over the Broncos, who only managed to score two yet again. Though more points were scored in the first, the second quarter saw the Cowboys offense pick up the pace as their lead grew over the Broncos. As the match sat 34-5 for the Cowboys, Coach Jason Berning switched out his starting lineup with substitutes. With their second team, the Cowboys still managed to maintain a comfortable lead as the second quarter closed the first half with a 34-4 pounding lead for the Cowboys.
The start to the second half was different than the start to the first, however the stacking of points continued as the Cowboys drilled another 16 points. The Broncos played a better third quarter, adding eight points to the scoreboard, though the lead was still far from their reach. As the third quarter came to a close, the Cowboys went into the final quarter, up 50-12 and soon up 5-0 for the season. As the starters for the Cowboys rested, and the second team played, Coach Berning continued to instruct and coach the players. The Cowboys were never carried away with the score, as the team continued to push forward for points. SR Landon Olson praises Coach Berning and his coaching style as he says, “Coach B is the best coach around!”
As the fourth quarter came to an end, the Cowboys added 13 points to their lead, ending the game with 63 while the Broncos added five, losing the game with 17. The Broncos were simply outmatched by the Cowboys on Thursday night. Pounding 20 points for the Cowboys, with one steal, one assist, and five rebounds, was SR Jaxon Carpenter as he contributed the most points for the Cowboys. Followed by Carpenter was SR Connor State, who scored 13 points along with two blocks, two steals, three assists, and five rebounds. JR Nevan Foss scored eight points for the Cowboys, while SR Jacob Moore sank seven as the two also contributed with one rebound and three steals.
Another game, another win for the Cowboys. However, their next matchup is set for excitement as the Cowboys will host the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets on Friday, December 17, at 7:30 PM.
