POCAHONTAS
The Cowboys travelled to Pocahontas Tuesday night, where they achieved success…though it took some time to run away with the lead.
The first quarter saw a slow start from both teams as the Cowboys scored nine points while conceding four to end the first quarter. The second quarter favored the Indians as they successfully put away 10 points over the CGD Cowboys, who only added eight. Though ahead 17-14 at half-time, the Cowboys were struggling to put away a 3-6 team.
“He loves the game of basketball,” Landon Olson claimed, as he praised Coach Berning for his knowledge and the passion for the game. He continued, “[Berning] loves his players even more and that will contribute to the future success of this basketball program for sure!”
The second quarter definitely was a turn around for the Cowboys, as they drilled 16 points in the third quarter. Only conceding five, the Cowboys held a comfortable lead at 33-19. Their lead carried on to the fourth quarter, as they scored another 19 points though letting up 18. The Cowboys, however, still managed to put the Indians away and secure their ninth victory in a 52-37 triumph.

The Cowboys’ next matchup was set for Thursday night at 7:30 PM where they would match-up with fellow rivals and undefeated…
HUMBOLDT
Two teams. Same conference. Both undefeated. Only one could go home victorious. Unfortunately, this time, it wasn’t the Cowboys.
Claiming their first loss this season, the Cowboys fell short of their 10th consecutive win as the Humboldt Wildcats proved to be the better team Thursday night, with a score of 77-60. “Humboldt is a very good team. We knew we would have to play really well to stay with them as their offense has been on fire,” Coach Berning stated.
The first quarter was won by the Wildcats, though the Cowboys pressured Humboldt, making them earn their success. The Wildcats scored 17 in the first quarter while the Cowboys added 13. With it only being a four point game, there was plenty of time for the Cowboys to fire back, though it also meant there was plenty of time for the Wildcats to continue their offensive attacks. The second quarter saw 16 points from Humboldt with another 13 from the Cowboys.
“Our defense, which has been a strength all season long, just couldn’t get the stops we needed to stay with them in the second half,” Berning added, as the Cowboys took a beating in the third quarter. Only scoring seven, the Wildcats capitalized and scored 22 points to gain a comfortable lead. “Their hot shooting allowed them to pull away,” Berning commented, as he acknowledged the energy of the game. The fourth quarter saw the Cowboys scoring the most points, for both teams, as they added 27 to their score. However, the Wildcats poured another 22 points on the Cowboys as they secured their 11th win with a score of 77-60.
“This was a good game for us as we know the second time around through the conference is going to force us to make some adjustments to our play,” Bernind finished, with hopes for the next game to be a victory against the conference rivals.
