Cowboys catch success over Eagle Grove, St. Edmond, and Webster City

VS EAGLE GROVE It was the first game of the season for the Cowboys when they defeated the Eagles 61-28. Monday night’s matchup shared similar results, as the Cowboys won 74-32…though it didn’t start off too hot for the Cowboys.

In the first quarter, the Cowboys sat their starting lineup. However, within a few minutes, the starting lineup was needed again as the Cowboys were down 9-2. Coach Berning promptly responded as the starting lineup emerged onto the court. The Cowboys stole the show throughout the rest of the quarter–and quite frankly the entire game. The Cowboys drilled 20 points over the Eagles, ending the first quarter 20-9. The Eagles never surrendered, as they continued their drive, pressuring the Cowboys offensively while struggling defensively. The Cowboys scored another 16 points in the second quarter, while only allowing six. The first half ended 36-15 with the Cowboys on top.

Starting the third quarter stronger than any quarter, and completely opposite from the first, the Cowboys continued to secure baskets over the Eagles, putting on quite a show for the spectators. The third quarter saw an impressive 26 points from the Cowboys while the Eagles added their most points scored as well, adding 12. Heading into the fourth and final quarter, the Cowboys were up 62-27. With a roaring cheer from just about everyone in the stands, from fans on both sides, Jaden “The Half-Court Crusher” managed to drain a three pointer for the Eagles in the final minutes of the match. The game then concluded with a dominating win, as the Eagles were clobbered, again, but this time with a result of 74-32. After their triumph over the Eagles, the Cowboys faced St. Edmond on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

VS ST. EDMOND The Cowboys saw another victory as they travelled to the home of the St. Edmond Gaels where they grasped a 65-55 win against the Gaels.

Though 6-5 at the time, the St. Edmond Gaels made the Cowboys earn their win Tuesday night when the Gaels hosted the CGD Cowboys. Defeating the Gaels 70-61 last time around with highest points from Connor State, 18, and Coady Olson and Jaxon Carpenter, 16, the Cowboys experienced similar struggle while grasping the victory over the Gaels.

The first quarter saw 17 points from the Cowboys, as the Gaels only trailed six points behind with 11 points scored. The second quarter saw similar performances from both sides, as the first half concluded with the Cowboys holding on to the lead with 33, and the Gaels trailing at 24. The game was far from over, however, as both teams scored their highest amount of points in the upcoming, third quarter. 20 points were slammed over the Gaels in the opening of the second half, while the Gaels fought back, scoring 17. Finishing off the Gaels in the final quarter, the Cowboys earned their eleventh win in a 10 point margining victory.

After defeating the Gaels 65-55, the Cowboys’ next target was the Webster City Lynx as they hosted the Lynx on Friday, Jan. 21.

VS, WEBSTER CITY Another relatively close matchup for the Cowboys, as the Webster City Lynx fought hard throughout the beginning of the match…but once the Cowboys took off, there was no turning back.

The first quarter proved to be a tight race for first as the Cowboys were just two points ahead of the Lynx to finish up the first eight minutes of the game. Up 12-10, the Cowboys bolted through the second quarter quashing any possible hopes that rested in the eyes of the Lynx spectators, as the Cowboys poured 21 points over the Lynx, who scored 11 before the end of the first half.

After the announcements of king and queen for Winterfest that took place Saturday night for the CGD students, the Cowboys were up 33-21 as they approached the third quarter. Both teams added 10 points in the third quarter, proving nothing for the Lynx as the Cowboys were then up 43-31. With the final quarter at hand, the Cowboys truly ended the night with a show as stellar maneuvers were made from the CGD players. With jukes and twirls, fakes and stutters, the Cowboys finished the Lynx stylishly, adding 13 points to the final quarter while conceding 12. The Lynx side of the court surely grew silent as the Cowboys contributed a fifth loss for the Lynx, and snatched a 12th win this season.

Winning their 12th game 56-43, the Cowboys were then seeking a 13th win as they hosted Clear Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
