Last Friday, former Philadelphia Eagle and motivational speaker Vince Papale visited Clarion. Papale spoke to various groups throughout the day and shared an uplifting and inspirational message.
On Friday morning, he first spoke to the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows staff and faculty during a professional development in-service. Later in the day, his talk to the student body was well attended, even though it was voluntary since there was not school that day. In the evening, Papale wrapped up his day by speaking at a CGD Sports Boosters event at the Red Shed Events Center.
In all the iterations of this talk, Papale shared details from his life story. In 1976, when Papale was a 30-year-old high school teacher and coach, as well as a part-time bartender, the Philadelphia Eagles held an unprecedented public try-out. At that time, the Eagles had just experienced their 11th year of defeat. The city of Philadelphia needed something to lift their spirits and give them hope, and this public try-out did just that. Papale acted on a whim and tried out for the team. As a ten-year season ticket holder and former track star who hadn't played any football in college, Papale was beyond surprised to learn that he had made the cut — and made history as well. Papale’s story was eventually made into the 2006 Disney movie, “Invincible.”
In his speeches on Friday, Papale shared the lessons he learned along the way. He reiterated the mantra “dream big.” For the students, he also detailed several “dream killers” to avoid in life, such as bullying. He implored the students to never quit, be a leader, be prepared and win the day.
His evening talk to the boosters and guests covered much of the same topics with a fair amount of humor mixed in. Papale also emphasized the importance of groups like sports boosters and other leaders, coaches, and helpers who can impact young people.
Overall, Papale said he had a great day in Clarion and that the people and students will always hold a special place in his heart.
