VS. CLEAR LAKE
The Cowgirls hosted the Clear Lake Lions on Tuesday night. The first time these two rivals battled each other this season, the Lions hosted the Cowgirls and delivered the Cowgirls their first loss of the season. Tuesday night saw the visiting team triumphant over the Cowgirls hosting the Lions.
The first quarter saw aggression from both the Lions and Cowgirls. Only four points behind the Lions to start the match, the Cowgirls added 10 while the Lions secured 14. Hoping for another competitive eight minutes, the Cowgirls struggled to repeat their performance from the first quarter. Conceding 13 points, the Cowgirls only managed to score four before the end of the first half. As half-time arrived, the Cowgirls were down 27-14
With the second half underway, the Lions continued their heavy, dominant pressure over the Cowgirls. Though the Cowgirls were pressured throughout the game, the girls never backed down and, instead, persistently responded to the Lions with similar pressure and eagerness. Though the Cowgirls remained aggressive and eager throughout the game, their struggle to combat the Lions continued as they scored eight points while letting up 10. In the final eight minutes, the Lions pounded the Cowgirls with buckets, proving they were the better team that night. Conceding 21 points, the Cowgirls only scored seven to seal the game with a loss of 58-29.
Though the Cowgirls experienced another loss this season, and from the Lions, the girls sought revenge as they were hosted by conference rivals Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets on Friday, Jan. 28, at 6:15 PM.
VS. IOWA FALLS-ALDEN
The rivalry between the Cowgirls and Cadets is evident, as these two teams fought until the very last seconds to claim victory. By just two points, the Cadets defeated the Cowgirls 48-46. It’s fair to say these two teams share a spicy rivalry as their all-time matchups, from 2006-Friday night’s game, favor the Cadets with 17 wins while the Cowgirls hold 14.
The first quarter favored the 5-11 Cadets, as they hosted the 6-10 Cowgirls. Down by three as they headed to the second quarter, the Cowgirls secured seven points while the Cadets gained 10. The second quarter proved their equivalent drive and hunger for the ball as both teams scored a solid 14 points to conclude the thrilling first half. By the end of the first half, the Cowgirls were down by three points again with a score of 24-21.
The third quarter saw the Cowgirls blasting through the Cadets, and penetrating their defense as they drained 15 points on their conference rivals. Only conceding seven points during the opening of the second half, the Cowgirls finally captured the lead, as the score temporarily sat at 36-31. The final quarter met its expectations, as it provided a thrilling, back-and-forth, competitive conclusion to the classic rivalry between the Cadets and Cowgirls. Adding 10 to their score, and ending the game with 46 points, the Cowgirls were just a mere three points short from victory. The Cadets scored 17 in the final quarter, bumping up their score to 48 and placing themselves ahead of the Cowgirls.
With the match over, settled in a frustrating result of 48-46, the Cowgirls had much to practice for as they were set to face the 12-4 West Hancock Eagles on Monday, Jan. 31, at 6:15 PM.
