VS. WEST HANCOCK Hosted by the West Hancock Eagles, the CGD Cowgirls were in for a rough night as they were bested 59-26.
The first quarter saw severe struggle from the Cowgirls. They only managed to score two points against the dominating Eagles, who pounded 12 points right from the opening quarter. The second quarter saw six points from the Cowgirls. What was an improvement from the first quarter didn’t do much for the Cowgirls as the Eagles scored 29 points, bumping their lead to a score of 41-8.
The second half was a completely different ball game. Both the Cowgirls and Eagles scored 10 points in the third quarter, increasing the score to 51-18. If only the first half started as the second half did, this game could have resulted completely differently. But it was too late for the Cowgirls to comeback, as the fourth quarter concluded the game with a score of 59-26. The Cowgirls saw their 12th defeat this season. VS. ALGONA It was a tough loss to swallow Tuesday night. The Cowgirls fought until the very last second last Tuesday night, as they hosted conference competitors Algona Bulldogs. The first quarter opened with dominance from the Cowgirls as they scored 11 points over the Bulldogs who only scored four. The second quarter required even more domination. However, the Cowgirls remained consistent as they scored another 11 points while the Bulldogs scored 14, 10 points more than what they scored in the first quarter. The first half ended 22-18 with the Cowgirls in the lead. The second half favored the Bulldogs rather than the Cowgirls. Scoring only eight points in the third quarter, the Cowgirls conceded 15 as the Bulldogs stole the lead. The score stood at 33-30 with the Cowgirls trailing by three points at the start of the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter lived up to its expectations as the Cowgirls battled until the very end, hoping to reclaim the lead and celebrate victoriously. The Bulldogs scored 18 points in the fourth quarter while the Cowgirls scored 16…resulting in the match as a defeat for CGD Cowgirls and a victory for Algona Bulldogs. The match ended 51-46, as the Cowgirls conceded their 13th defeat. As stated right from the beginning, it was a very tough loss to swallow. The Cowgirls put up a valiant fight, but it was the Bulldogs who stole the show. Next for the Cowgirls were the heavy Humboldt Wildcats, as they hosted the conference competitors on Friday, Feb. 4.

HUMBOLDT The Cowgirls hosted conference competitors Humboldt Wildcats last Friday. The Cowgirls responded to Humboldt's dominance with grit and perseverance as they never surrendered to what displayed on the scoreboard. Despite the 53-34 defeat to Humboldt, the Cowgirls made the Wildcats earn their win. The first quarter opened with 11 points from the Wildcats while the Cowgirls scored four. Down seven points, the Cowgirls charged through the second quarter scoring 11 points. Though they scored 11, they conceded 16 from the dominant Wildcats. Down 27-15 at half-time, the Cowgirls needed a stronger second half in order to comeback.
The third quarter saw an even performance from both teams, as both the Cowgirls and Wildcats scored 15 points. Offensively, the Cowgirls were responding with power, but the girls struggled defensively. No matter what, the Cowgirls fought until the very end. Even with a slight injury from Sawyer Morrical, the sophomore returned to the game in the fourth quarter. Down 42-30, the Cowgirls aimed for a dominant fourth quarter. However, the fourth quarter replicated the first, as the Cowgirls scored four points and the Wildcats scored 11.
Losing 53-34, the Cowgirls put up a powerful fight over Humboldt. Next up for the Cowgirls was Hampton-Dumont-CAL, as the match was the final game of the regular season.
