Parties hold caucuses in Wright County

Monday night, Iowa Republicans and Democrats held their precinct caucuses ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. In Wright County, the Republicans held their caucus at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School while the Democrat caucuses were at the Crossroads in Goldfield.

Caucusing during a midterm election year is not quite as splashy as a presidential election year. The chief purpose of the caucuses is to select delegates to the county convention. Precincts also pick a precinct chairperson. Parties may also adopt proposed resolutions to be added to the county platform.

At the Republican caucus, there were also various people that spoke on behalf of the candidates up for election. Peggy Schluttenhofer read a statement on behalf of incumbent Senator Chuck Grassley. Grassley is being primaried by Jim Carlin, and Herb Schreur gave a statement on behalf of that candidate.

Various Republican county officials spoke briefly and asked for continued support as they seek reelection. These included Treasurer Peggy Schluttenhofer, Recorder Denise Baker, and District 2 Supervisor Dean Kluss.

Candidates for District 56 State House or their supporters were also given a chance to speak. Peggy O’Neill spoke for Mark Thompson. Thompson, a Wright County resident, and Jim Nelson from Britt are both running for the seat to be vacated by Terry Baxter.
