Opening the second half, the Cowboys continued to control the game while the Cougars continued to struggle. Only scoring 13 points again, the Cougars just couldn’t hold off the Cowboys defensively. Last conference matchup. Second last game of the regular season. The tremendous season was nearing its end. And this matchup would be the Cowboys’ last win of the regular season.
The Cowboys took charge in the first quarter as they were hosted by the Bulldogs for their final conference matchup. VS. SOUTHEAST VALLEY
The Cowboys were hosted by the Southeast Valley Jaguars last Thursday night. It was the last regular season matchup for the Cowboys…and it didn’t end the way they had hoped.
The first quarter saw extreme competitiveness from both sides. The Jaguars capitalized on the Cowboys’ errors, as they slammed 17 points in the first quarter. Never backing down, and sticking through the entire game, the Cowboys scored 16 before the end of the first half. Down by one point, the Cowboys knew they needed a better second quarter. With momentum on their side, the Jaguars continued to capitalize the Cowboys while also putting forth heavy pressure. The Cowboys conceded 14 points in the second quarter, while securing 12. The first half ended 31-28 with the Jaguars in the lead. For the Cowboys, they’ve been in this situation before. Now it was just a matter of removing themselves from it.
The third quarter finally saw the Cowboys taking control. Improving defensively, the Cowboys only conceded seven points while scoring another 12. Heading into the fourth quarter up 40-38, the Cowboys needed another defensively dominant eight minutes to clinch their 19th win of the season. The 10-10 Jaguars capitalized yet again, as they scored 16 points over the Cowboys, who only managed to add 10 points to their score. The game concluded with the Cowboys losing by two points to the Jaguars, as the score stood at 53-51.
However, it wasn’t all that bad for the Cowboys. Because of Humboldt’s loss to Webster City, the CGD Cowboys finished the season tied for first place in the North Central Conference. This is the first NCC title for the Cowboys since 1962!
The 18-3 Cowboys’ next target will be the winner of Central Springs and Forest City. The winner will battle tonight right in Clarion for the 2A-3 Second Round. Tip-off is set for 7 PM.
Game stats unavailable before press time.
