It was the last 2021/2022 winter season matchup for the CGD Cowgirls last Tuesday night. With the season reaching its end, the Cowgirls lost their last game of the regular season 58-28. Hosted by the 15-6 Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs, the Cowgirls finished their season with a 6-15 record. It was a tough matchup for the Cowgirls, though they ended the season with determination for their next matchup that took place on Saturday, Feb. 12.
The first quarter saw back-and-forth competitive plays from the two North Central Conference teams. Scoring 15 points in the opening to the game, the Cowgirls proved their toughness as they only trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter. Down 17-15, the Cowgirls entered the second quarter with confidence and determination. However, the Bulldogs had a handful of tricks up their sleeves as they thrashed over the Cowgirls, scoring 21 points while the Cowgirls only managed to score two. Down 38-17, the Cowgirls approached half-time.
Hoping for a similar performance as the first quarter, the Cowgirls entered the second half and charged the Bulldogs offensively and defensively. Scoring four points in the third quarter, the Cowgirls defense let up 13 points to the dominant Bulldogs. The final eight minutes of the game had arrived, and the Cowgirls were losing by 30 points. A comeback was unlikely for the Cowgirls, considering how the game’s energy had been all night. It wasn’t over, however. Though the game was likely to be a loss for the Cowgirls, the girls continued their fight through the fourth quarter. Both teams concluded the game scoring seven points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs secured their win by 30 points, as they defeated the Cowgirls 58-28.
Following their loss to the Bulldogs, the Cowgirls were hosted by Estherville Lincoln Central Midgets last Saturday, for the Class 3A – Region 2 Quarterfinal.
