Cowboys golfers busy and SUCCESSFUL last week

In a hard-fought meet in Hampton on Tuesday, April 19, the total scores between all three teams, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, and Humboldt, only varied by 7 strokes. But at the end of the day, the Cowboy golfers took home the prize.

Varsity golfers included Elic Fjetland (Medalist) 41, Jacob Moore (Runner-up – lost in Handicap hole) 41, Cale Kirstein 42, Carson Nesheim 49, Garrett Seaba 57, and Coady Olson 57.

Coach Pat O’Brien was proud of his team. “There were some really good solid scores from the top three,” he said. “We thought that we were going to have to use a 57 for the 4th score but Carson came in late with the 49 to pull us ahead. For us to be a real contender, we are going to have to be real consistent in those top three and someone will have to stand up and be that solid 4th for us.”

O’Brien added that JV golfers Jackson Beisel (46) and Carson Harle (49) have earned a shot and will get it. “We are waiting for the cream to come to the top – and we don’t have a lot of time to waste,” said the coach. “About six guys have a chance to be that person.”

At a meet on Thursday, the Cowboys traveled to Jewell to play South Hamilton and Eagle Grove. CGD came out ahead with a score of 170 with SH receiving a 182 and EG coming in with a 211. Cale Kirstein received Medalist honors with a 41 beating out teammate Jacob Moore who also had a 41 but lost in a handicap hole decision. Jacob did receive Runner-up medalist though. Other counting scores were Fjetland with a 42 and Jackson Beisel with a 46. Colin Kirstein also added a 46 in the JV as the Cowboys took 1st place there also.

Friday, the boys competed against Iowa Falls-Alden and Webster City on the front 9 at Briggs Woods. The host team came out with the victory with a score of 178 and the Cowboys struggled with a 182 but beat IF-A who had a score of 202. Ironically the Lynx JV had the overall low score of the meet with a 175. The 4 low scores for CGD were Cale with a 44, Fjetland and Moore with 45’s and Jackson with a 48.

“We gave away an opportunity to beat WC at their place which doesn’t come about very often – that one will hurt,” Coach O’Brien reported. The JV was led by Carson Nesheim and Landen Kakacek with 54’s.

The varsity boys then traveled to Algona to play in an 18-hole tournament on Saturday. The team braved blustery conditions to come out with the 1st place medals. The finals scores were CGD 363, Forest City 385, Algona 426, Eagle Grove 445, and Belmond-Klemme 547. Jacob Moore received Medalist honors with a terrific score of 82.

Coach O’Brien stated, “In those conditions that score really shows patience and determination”. Other counting scores for the Cowboys were Elic Fjetland with an 89, and Cale and Colin Kirstein with 96s.

The Cowboys have the first part of the week off until they host Clear Lake and St. Edmond at Clarmond on Friday and then take on numerous opponents at the West Hancock Tournament in Britt on Saturday.
