NCC golf round-up, Moore medalist at NCC tournament

The CGD Boys Golf Team tackled the wind at the North Central Conference at Fort Dodge on Monday. To sum it up, Coach Pat O’Brien said, “We had a very successful day but still came home somewhat disappointed as a team.”

Senior Jacob Moore was Conference Medalist with a 78, Cale Kirstein was 3rd with an 81 and Elic Fjetland was 8th with an 85 – all were awarded All-Conference for being in the top 8. O’Brien added, “We just couldn’t find that lower 4th score that we needed (Carson Harle was next best with a 94) so we came up basically two strokes short of a conference tournament title.”

On the team level, a very young Clear Lake team came out with the win with a score of 337. On paper, CGD tied for second with Humboldt (only one stroke off first) with 338s. However, the team was considered third because Humboldt’s 5th score was lower than CGD’s. Other scores- Webster City- 340, Hampton-Dumont-CAL- 341, Iowa Falls-Alden- 384, St. Edmond- 404, Algona- 415.

“We had a great conference and regular season,” commented O’Brien. “But coming up four strokes short of the regular season championship and two strokes at conference kind of stings! We will need all of what we’ve got on Wednesday at sectionals.”

Cowgirls take third in conference

On the girls’ side of the NCC Tournament, the Cowgirls battled the gale force winds at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore. According to Coach Austin Heeren, the weather started around 66 degrees and was in the upper 80s by the time they finished. The wind was a consistent 20-30 MPH the entire day.

“The girls played extremely well given the conditions,” said Heeren.

The Cowgirls were led by Karina Torres who shot 97 and finished 9th place just one shot off of All-Conference. Emily Christensen placed 11th with a 103. She shot a career low 9-hole round on the back nine with a 44. Sawyer Morrical shot 110 to place 13th and the final scorer for Clarion was Lauren Brooks with a 123 placing 29th.  Also competing for the Cowgirls was Julia Gardner who shot a 140 and Sydney Friesleben with a 148.

The Cowgirls finished 3rd in the team standings. Clear Lake lead the way with a 352 followed by Humboldt with a 391 and Clarion with a 433. Iowa Falls Alden shot 446, Algona shot 448, Hampton-Dumont shot 457 and Webster City rounded out the team scores with a 473. St. Eds did not have enough players to register a team score.

"The girls fought hard dealing with the wind today and a third place finish is very good in this tough conference,” emphasized Heeren. “Today was a great warm-up as we look towards Friday’s regional meet at Holstein. The girls have worked hard all year and are peaking at the right time going into regional play"
