Cowboys and Cowgirls compete at State Track, Foss takes 9th in high jump

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Cowgirls attacked the blue oval at the State Track Meet in Des Moines this past week. And although the teams may have not gotten their hoped-for results, there were some notable achievements.

Cowboys Wrap-up

CGD’s highest placer was junior Nevan Foss who continued his solid season in the high jump. On Friday, Foss tied a personal best 6-2.00 jump and ended up placing 9th. The winner of the event, Derek Weisskopf from Williamsburg, had a jump of 6-7.00.

Cowboys Coach Ben Lindaman said he was happy to see Foss hit that personal best benchmark at state. “Nevan was able to tie his personal best of 6’2” in the high jump. He just missed an 8th place medal because of a miss on the previous height. He ended up 9th place in a field of 24. It was nice to see Nevan at least tie his personal best at the state meet. As a coach that is what you hope for.”

The coach added that he had hoped for better results in the relays. The 4×100 m group with runners Rigo Bobadilla, Connor State, Nevan Foss and Aidan Harrington came in 23rd overall with a time of 45.18. The 4×200 relay team with Jacob Ingebritson, Bobadilla, Foss, and Harrington came in 18th at 1:34.55.

“I was hoping for a little better in the relay races,” said Lindaman. “The two boys relays did not make it out of the preliminary rounds. The 4×200 came into the meet ranked 14 and ended up placing 18th out of 24 teams. The 4×100 was ranked 13 and finished in 23rd place.”

At the end of the day, Lindaman was proud of his team. “It was still a great experience for the athletes that participated. Last year we had two events at the state meet and this year we had three. Hopefully we will continue to add more events in the future years.”

Cowgirls Wrap-up

On the girls side, the meet started out with a tough break for the Cowgirls. The promising shuttle hurdle relay team of Mikayla Beisel, Clarissa Hasty, Ezra Heifner and Kennedy Trca appeared to get first in their prelim heat. However, the news did not look good when coach Monty Harker was called to speak to the referee after the race. The team was ultimately disqualified due to a runner getting off the blocks too early.

“The state meet was a little disappointing,” said Harker. “The shuttle hurdle ran great and would have qualified for the finals at number 6th in the state but we were disqualified.  I thought it was a terrific achievement for them to do that considering Ezra had never hurdled before the start of the season.”

In individual events, Beisel came in 16th in the 100 m hurdles with a time of 16.45. Trca was a few places behind that at 19th with a personal best time of 16.61. Beisel also took 19th in the 400 m hurdles with a time of 1:11.40. “Both Kennedy and Makayla had a terrific season in the hurdles,” noted Harker. “They were the fastest two hurdlers I have ever coached.”

“I am still impressed with what all of them did this season,” added the coach. “We only had 9 runners and still never finished last in a meet and won the team title at the Nevada relays. They truly were a small but mighty group.”
