Softball team struggles in early games, big win on Memorial Day

Weather hampered the start of the season for the Cowgirls Softball team last week. The week was supposed to start with games against Eagle Grove on Tuesday, in addition to the dedication of the new field. That game and the event were rained out. (A make-up game will be played on June 25th at 4:00 pm, JV followed by varsity).  On Wednesday, the girls game against Hampton-Dumont-CAL was also postponed because of the weather. (It will be made-up on July 1).

Coach Steve TerHark’s girls finally got to play in chilly breezy condition on Thursday against the tough Osage Green Devils. The girls had a devil of time putting together runs throughout the game. Osage put 2 on the board in the first inning, 1 in the fourth and then had monster fifth inning with 9 runs. The Cowgirls lost 12-0 that night. (See the front page for photos of the field dedication).

On Friday, the team took the show on the road to Algona. The Bulldog ladies won the game 12-2. The Cowgirls got both runs in the second inning, but couldn’t keep up against Algona’s steady stream of girls crossing home plate.

On Memorial Day Monday, the Cowgirls played a home game against the West Hancock Eagle. The girls got a slow start but ended up beating the Eagles by a huge margin of 15-1.

During the game, two Cowgirls crushed the first ever homeruns on the new field. Clarissa Hasty hit the first and Kennedy Trca added another one.

Game stats for these three games had not been posted by press time.
