Cowgirls clean up at Indoor Track Championships

The Clarion Goldfield Dows Cowgirls were among a dozen track teams to compete at the North Iowa Girls Indoor Championships, held at the Clear Lake Athletics and Wellness Center in Clear Lake on Thursday, March 23rd. Hosted by the Clear Lake Lions, the Cowgirls were joined at the event by (in alphabetical order) Algona, Central Springs, Forest City, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, Hampton-Dumont-Cal, Iowa Falls-Alden, Lake Mills, Nevada, and St. Ansgar.

 

In the field events that began the events, several Cowgirls distinguished themselves. In shot putting, Ellie Mewes took 16th place, with a throw of 28' and 11.5". In 24th place, Kacqueline Kirstein tossed 26', 7". And Ella Tew locked down 36th place with a toss of 21" and 11.5". In the High Jump competition, Makayla Biesel won bronze with a leap of five feet on the nose. And in the Long Jump Makenna Hasty took fifth, jumping just shy of 15 feet, at 14' 9.75". And Kennedy Trca secured seventh place with another near fifteen foot leap of 14' 9".

 

In distance events, the cowgirls ruled the field. Makayla Biesel took first in the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 31.27. And sweeping the 60 meter hurdles, Clarissa Hasty took 6th with a time of 11.05, while Biesel took second with a time of 10.28, and Kennedy Trca won with a first place finish of 9.02! In distance running, Harley Charlson took 6th in the 800 meter run in 2:54.77. In the 1500 meter run, Julia Dahlin came in at 11th place with a time of 6:23.58. In sprints, Makenna Hasty took 6th place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.51, while Clarissa Hasty came in hot on her heels, just two tenths behind at 29.53 for a very close 7th. And in the 60 meter dash Jackson Kennedy took 21st, with a time of 9.02.

 

The standout performances continued in the relays. The foursome of Makayla Beisel, Clarisa Hasty, Jackson Kennedy, and Kennedy Trca took fourth in the shuttle hurdle in a time of 43.94. And the foursome of Clarisa and Makenna Hasty, Jackson Kennedy, and Kennedy Trca took fifth place in the 4×200 with a time of 2:00.62.

 

Overall the Cowgirls took 6th place for the meet with a grand total of 57 points. The hosts, the Clear Lake Lions, were the meet champions, with 109 points.
