Honoring American Heroes

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows School District continued one of its most important traditions on Friday, November 10th. The event honors Veterans and those serving uniquely, going over various symbolic military traditions with student participation. The ceremony is then followed by a free meal for veterans.

This event is not only a way to honor those who have served but is also an important part of our children’s education that extends outside of the classroom. The symbolic ceremony, the skills taught, and the understanding of our veterans’ sacrifice are lessons that will stay with our children into their adult lives.

Guest speaker Joshua Tew,  Retired Sgt. 1st Class U.S. Army Reserves, deviating a little from his original script, revealed that the influence of Memorial Day ceremonies in his Clarion childhood played a role in his decision to join the Army Reserves.

Before Tew gave his speech, the crowd took part in the Pledge of Allegiance, something our students know well as they recite every day before classes. The band performed a perfect rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'

The high school chorus offered beautiful, moving music to extend their appreciation as well. The flag-folding ceremony, taking place after Tew’s speech, was a highlight of the event. Members of Clarion VFW Post 2612 and Dows American Legion Post 523 gave the 21 Gun Salute to honor those we have lost and to signify the end of the event.

The event was live streamed on the CGD social media pages as well as their website and brought attention from state-level media companies. Ruth Katz generously supplied the photos that accompany this article.
