In 1905, Attorney Paul P. Harris founded Rotary in Chicago. His goal was to create a professional club for local men. By 1910, sixteen Rotary clubs met in Chicago for the first convention, establishing the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America. The club of professionals for good only grew from there, engaging in initiatives like Exchange Student programs and contributing to the fight against polio.
The national organization's core ethics are based on four questions:
*Is it the Truth?
*Is it Fair to all concerned?
*Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
*Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
These are questions members of Rotary Clubs across America ask themselves before considering a community project. These questions can be answered with an honest yes when considering Clarion’s Rotary Secret Santa Project, their annual holiday outreach.
The Rotary is raising funds to be divided between the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and the Clarion Police Department. This year, both the police department and the sheriff’s office aim to allocate some funds for larger gifts, such as groceries, clothes, and toys for families in need. In the past cash donations were given to individuals and families needing extra assistance.
Rotarian Brooke Nerlien shared why the initiative is even more important this year than in years past, “The cost of living has continued to rise, especially the cost of food. A small cash gift may help a family have a nice holiday meal.”
Last year, local law enforcement gave $2,400 to families in need. Wright County Sheriff Jason Schluttenhofer commented on the positive impact on both recipients and helpers, especially given the current challenges many families are facing in our area.
Cash and checks, made out to Clarion Rotary, can be dropped off from now until December 18th at First Citizens Bank and First State Bank in Clarion.
Online donations are accepted through the Venmo app at Clarion-Rotary. Use the last four digits of 3488 to confirm you are paying the right organization while donating through Venmo.
Rotarians Brooke Nerlien, Sherri O’Brien, Steve Mulford, and Mark Skogerboe will also accept donations. The sheriff’s and police department encourage reaching out if you know someone in need of help this holiday season.
