Nesheim Passes the Torch

As an inexperienced freshman on the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys basketball team, Carson Nesheim looked up to senior leader and future assistant coach, Mateo Martinez.

“I always wanted to play like him and lead a team like he did,” Nesheim said with admiration. “It’s been really cool that he came back to coach.”

This season, it was Nesheim’s turn to take the reins. He led his team in scoring for the second year in a row, helped defeat Eagle Grove at Wells Fargo Arena, and even earned a well deserved spot on the North Central Conference’s All-Conference 3rd Team.

“Our conference is really tough,” Carson admitted. “There are some good players in our conference.”

Nesheim has always been confident in his scoring abilities, but this year his coaches wanted him to turn his focus to the defensive end. He responded by finishing top-10 in the NCC in steals per game.

“I felt like my defensive presence was the best part of my game this year,” he stated with pride.

His versatile talents on the court won’t be forgotten anytime soon, but Nesheim says he hopes to be remembered for his impact on younger Cowboys and Cowgirls.

“It’s special having younger kids look up to you,” he remarked. “The fact that I get to play for this team and hopefully have kids look up to me and want to play the sport too is really awesome.”
